Progress in Artistic Ability
Doodlibop (Dec 1, 2003)
As I skim through all the drawing boards, I'm come to realize that some people here are just not improving in their art skill. Some just continue to draw the same thing or style over and over and will not explore or better their current style. It's kind of...sad. I must admit though; the people on the beginner board are actually improving, and I applaud them. But those who are on the intermediate especially and even the advanced, I see no kind of improvement. It's silly. Expand! Explore! and...

thanks
hm... looking at it, i like the way the thumb turned out, but i don't like the fingers... they're too short, haven't quite got the perspective...
oh well, that's what practice is for right...?
Childlike_Vampire (edited Dec 7, 2003)
Yeah dude, I really like that. The shading looks liquidy smooth even tho it's not, with the lines n stuff, and I don't think the fingers are too short...course I don't know how you intended them to be. lol.

->Well, you said it wasn't a human hand...it's quite obviously not human...it minds me kinna of this pic by V.V., the top hand there. It looks good man.
rydicanubis (Dec 7, 2003)
yeah, it's just, if you put your own hand in that position, you can see the digits are too short...
looks too much like a paw, not enough like a hand...
Harmanye (edited Dec 7, 2003)
Well, since it's un-skinly brown-green and only has three fingers, how our own hands look don't really enter into it. I love the picture either way though, the shadow on the surface is fantastic.

Well, I tried to avoid textures, cos i wanted a cel style look (how arse up THAT went)
marcello (Dec 6, 2003)
you can have textures and still maintain cel shading, it's simply a matter of making the shadows and shades more interesting. also cleaning up the lineart on the ground may help. But for example, you could have tufts of grass and maybe some flowers or plants of some sort sticking up out of the ground.

you also might want to note how the shadow and lighting of the grass are in relation to eachother, and the sun. Since you have the sun rather low in the sky, it would actually be considerably redder, shadows would be very deep (and going in the opposite direciton of the sun), and the hill would be darker towards the bottom of the image, rather than towards the right/top.
Edward (edited Dec 7, 2003)
If you notice the shading on the face,body and the bodys shadows, go to the left side then when you look at the grass the shadow is on the right side and then the sun is behind you SO..the face should be complely shadowed and the hill should have a little highlight along the very top of it.i like the way the sun reflects on the water...AND...Welcome to the site! *pat*

I didn't even want this to turn out the way it did... Yes, this is my first Oekaki! I draw alot better than this on paper... so yeah. I guess it's some kind of guy that has blue hair and a big ego... I dunno, that's what he looks like to me XD

It is sad that my pictures usually look better when they aren't colored. =/ How do you guys get your smooth, liquidy coloring? Is it your mad skillz, or a secret button..? o.o;;

I think your shading looks good! the only thing i think that makes this picture look a lil odd is the eyes have no pupils and have the white on the inside instead of the outside Oo....
mazi (Dec 7, 2003)
i dunno about everyone else but i use pen for lineart, and then pen on the next layer down to get the base colors and then the watercolor 2 tool to shade. using lots of the dropper (i think its ctrl.. or right-click.. or something..) helps blend colors. and in advanced mode (check your settings) you can right click on the color bars and get h/s/b instead of insane color bars.
HJ (Dec 7, 2003)
Okie, I think I get what you're saying, Mazi.
Thanks for the critique, Edward! :) Yah, I draw my eyes pretty funky, heh.

bloody guitar is giving me trouble.

ok good. done. though i realize i forgot a few small things (as i always do) like the shading on the red part of the guitar and the actual seat part of the couch. ive already went over space. so i guess it stops there. and its not that big of a deal so i guess i wont bother giving it more space.

i think i need a good collab partner to kick me in the ass and give me some inspiration.

p.s. yes he is humping it. -_-;

[edit: DAMNIT! i forgot his fishnets/mesh ><;]

O.O I want to steal the outfit and rape the guy. You are way too good at drawing, I'd be lying if I said it didn't irk me. *feels utterly inferior* Ah well, lol. Well, I really like the hair too, but I think I'd like it more if it was just a teensy bit shorter. I have nothing against long hair, it's just that this particular style seems to me like it should be shorter. Anyway, this picture is my God, I love it, Awesome job.

Wow, Awesome hair Lucy ^_^ I think though, that the tongue should have darker shading underneath it, because it looks 'rolled' in the picture, Unless that's what you were looking for.
and a neck, necks are good ^_^.
But the rest is amazing, and very realistic, Good job! Keep it up :)
