Contest Week 41: Cartoon Painting - 11 day contest

Your goal these next 11 days is to paint a cartoon character in the style of a painter from the lists below. For instance, you might pick the cartoon character Betty Boop and paint her in the style of Raphael. I highly suggest you research the cartoon character you're going to paint and the style of the artist you'll be painting the character in. **You must pick from the lists provided below, if you break this rule, your entry will not be judged, you'll be disqualified.

I realize other artists like Ron English and Todd Schorr have done this before, do not copy their work. But do have fun. :)

**NOTE: You don't need to copy the artists paintings, just the artists style. Of course, copying parts of their paintings is okay too but just know that's not the goal, the style is.

You must pick your artist and cartoon character from the lists below:

Cartoon Characters:

SpongeBob SquarePants
Mickey Mouse
Homer Simpson
Betty Boop
Speed_Racer
Daffy_Duck
Winnie the Pooh
The_Powerpuff_Girls

Artists and their art movements:

Pablo Picasso - Cubism
Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Impressionism
Raphael - Renaissance
Andy Warhol - Pop art
Vincent van Gogh - Post-impressionism
Jean-Michel Basquiat - Neo-expressionism
Mark Ryden - Pop-surrealism/Low-brow
Rembrandt - Baroque

can i do a character from winnie the pooh? or does it have to be pooh bear?\
  icon
cmb (Dec 27, 2006)
certainly challenging! i keep entering in the hope I will improve my skills!

Kloxboy (Dec 27, 2006)
Qwerty Wittle Fawah: As long as Pooh is the focal point (or center of interest) in your painting, you can draw other Pooh related characters. I would suggest you make sure any additional characters don't take away from Pooh in your picture, Pooh is what's important. (did I really just say all that? heh)

This contest is really interesting....so many creative combinations. I find myself browsing the contest board frequently to see if a new piece has been submitted. Great idea, Klox.

Being a diehard in the pursuit of fairness, I think it's important to note that artists do not actually have to draw the actual cartoon characters as stated in the guidelines of the contest. The participants in the contest can draw completely different figures and simply state that the figures represent a cartoon character, when in fact there is no similarity at all to the original cartoon. I thought you'd like to know this, in the event that if someone didn't think they could draw a cartoon character, but in fact could easily copy one of the listed artist's original work and call it a character representation, that this is permissable under the broad guidelines of this contest, as it's been pointed out only to me.

ps It may be helpful to make it more clear in the future exactly what is required in the contest. On the other hand, I've always seen people in the past adhering to exactly what the guidelines were. Perhaps there was more gray area this time? I don't know.

Nice inspirational samples. You can tell who the artist has chosen to depict in each example..the similarities are unmistakable.

Sweetcell (edited Jan 4, 2007)
I've officially withdrawn from this contest. Good luck to everyone.
  icon
Miss_DJ (Jan 4, 2007)
Why withdraw at all when Kloxboy himself says your draw qualifies? I think it would be a mistake to do that, truly. Good luck to you.
  icon
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jan 4, 2007)
Awww, hey'all. If you girls are gonna keep this up, I think we're gonna have to put on bikinis, water down the dirt and start pulling hair. Don't withdraw the entry.
  icon
Axil62 (Jan 4, 2007)
And please remember...no wagering.
  icon
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jan 4, 2007)
I can't help it if I'm stupid and I don't know what the Powerpuff girls look like and I don't know who Mark what's his face is, I don't get out much.... well, I do... but there aren't any people where I go.
  icon
Miss_DJ (Jan 4, 2007)
why is it pray tell that Axil (to name just one) can say anything (and does) about any of our draws that he wants to say and nobody says a thing about his commentary...and I say one thing in contrast with most of the other comments and all hell breaks frickin loose? jeez. I don't wanna get in the mud. But if Axil wants to get in the mud with pretty much anyone, I'd watch that one...and wager, too.
  icon
Axil62 (Jan 4, 2007)
Timing, it's all about timing.
  icon
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jan 4, 2007)
Ok, ya'll meet me back here in 5 minutes. I'll get the bathing suits and turn on the water.
  icon
Miss_DJ (Jan 4, 2007)
Axil: Time this. lol

DBA: for you two? cool! Don't forget the bubble gum pink lipstick, Cindy, it'll match your swimsuit..well, at least at first...
  icon
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jan 4, 2007)
Wait a minute, HON. You gotta provide your own suit...I don't have a top that'll fit you. You're like a perfect D... double D, maybe, and I'm only a good C. (BITCH!) :)

Wait... I have like 10 different shades of bubble gum. This could take a while.
  icon
Miss_DJ (Jan 4, 2007)
you know I am a 38DD right now...f-in A! But, that just goes along with my other porky parts...lololol. Hey Bitch takes one to know one. hahahaha. Bubble gum lipstick ROCKS! Did you know my nieces call me Auntie Lipstick? This is actually true. So I can understand COMPLETELY why you'd have 10 different shades of bubble gum.
  icon
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Jan 6, 2007)
Tight 34C here... and you aren't PORKY. AUNTIE LIPSTICK? LMAO... should change your user id. My nieces like my sparkley pink lipgloss.
  icon
Miss_DJ (Jan 4, 2007)
maybe that's a nice id a! Aren't nieces the best? I have one named Emily that just graduated from Navy bootcamp. I'm mega proud of her. I call her Emily Soupie Doo..she calls me Auntie Lipstick. Hey, what's life but to enjoy and be able to laugh a lot..especially at ourselves.
  icon
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jan 4, 2007)
hah... id a. funny :)
  icon
Miss_DJ (Jan 4, 2007)
is it even possible to change it? So many others are so clever. Mine's blah.
  icon
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jan 4, 2007)
I think you can, but I don't know how, I never checked because I know I'll always be what mine says.
  icon
Miss_DJ (Jan 4, 2007)

  icon
davincipoppalag (Jan 4, 2007)

  icon
davincipoppalag (Jan 5, 2007)
It's good with vanilla ice cream in it
  icon
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jan 5, 2007)
Yeah, but you won't look good in your bikini, Dave, (even in the mud) if you have too much root beer and ice cream.
  icon
davincipoppalag (Jan 5, 2007)
I don't wear bikinis..so it' safe..and only some hangs over top of the red speedo so its ok
  icon
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jan 5, 2007)

  icon
davincipoppalag (Jan 5, 2007)
