jekyll (May 2, 2010)
I did this a while ago. I was experimenting with the texture tools to try and mimic watercolour with a textured paper effect. It likely doesn't belong on the advanced board, but I hope it gives some of you some ideas.

It's beautiful! And it does look like watercolor.
Suntan (May 27, 2010)
hmmm..I missed this! wow, you really did do a great job recreating watercolor. It's lovely, like a cove of a larger lake. Quite familiar looking! :)
jekyll (May 27, 2010)
Thank you, all. I've never really tried using watercolour to paint with and to be honest, it never really appealed to me. Lately, however, Ive gained an interest in it and have been studying various techniques on the web. I hope to give it a try in the near future. I made this scene up but there are many places like this in the area where I live. I suppose it's time I start taking advantage of it. It'd be a good excuse to just sit by a lake, anyway.
Suntan (Jun 24, 2010)
Have you been taking advantage of it yet? :)

Lovely little kingfishers, nicely picking up the wing colour in the eyes :) and a nice looking tree, the fluggy green looks a bit strange though :D.

gorgeous!

You always have nice texture work going on. If you combine smooooth and nice texture, you've got a Lauryn piece in front of you :).

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
And no religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

that is just absolutely sweet. I want him, but I don't think my own dog will react well. it's just so awwwww
enirroc (Apr 8, 2010)
This picture drew my attention for three reasons.
1: I have the same type of dog.
2: I had a cat named Mr. Stinky.
3: It's really good. =D

Nice job.

The real Easter Egg.

I remember making these with my mom and grandma during Easter. Good memories.
This was as hard to draw as dying an actual Pysanka..... except no wax....... or dye....... or candle....... or kistky.

Happy eat the chocolate rabbit butt first instead of the ears day everyone.

This looks a lot like romanian easter eggs. So.. easter eggs and cabbage rolls, tradition and cuisine. It seems we have common ancestors. And it makes sense - our countries share a border.

terracotta (Dec 28, 2005)
Very beautiful. The colours are so lovely and her expression is compelling--I get a sense of worry or indecision. The only thing I might suggest working on is the dark shadow above her eyelid--if you could soften the edge of that to give the impression of a smoother increase in the roundness of the bone structure just below the eyebrow.

Oooo. I love the way you've mixed the desaturated tones of the hat and her skin with the supersaturated colours of her lips, her kimono and the background. The hat is *ahem* well, dammit, amazing. Love the tension in the chin strap/skin and the way you've just managed to hide her eyes from the viewer...so we're always trying to peer up under the edge of the hat. Critiques? Hmmm. That gorgeous bouncelight underneath her chin makes me wish there was a tiny bit of shine on the skin of her cheek. But's that nitpicking. I love this.
comd (Mar 19, 2006)
It's insane how much subtle texture is in the skin here. I can't begin to imagine how to do this with lascaux sketch, and it'd still be incredible regardless of the medium.

It's so effective to leave the hair and dress less detailed. One of my favourite painting styles--a mixture of impressionism and realism. When it works, as this does, I think there is no painting style more beautiful. Looking at these purples and orange/golds together is a sensory treat.

Yes, please, size 7 !/2. And, do they come in RED? Those patten leather highlights and the way you've done the floor make me giddy.

does anyone else click through the versions and ever think "this is probably as good as i could make it, or this is where i'd leave it if i was doing it." it would probably be version 1 on this for me. i really don't have the patience to make things this good :):)

staci did a series of face pics, you might like to compare or something.

SYTHE (Feb 6, 2006)
Next you'll paint Willies right ear, eventually we'll see his whole face. This is great, I love the attention to detail.
