Trying to get a feel for what it takes to make a human head (not necessarily realistic: just something I could comfortably draw without a reference - could be cartoonish). I am having serious perspective problems. Maybe I should start off with a cube to get a feel for the correct angle and how to place the features in proper symmetrical form. I ended up drawing those horizontal and vertical lines towards the end only to realize that features were really assymetrical/lopsided. |

I was trying to doodle a weird alien woman (actually it started off as an attempt to draw a human head without a reference, but I was screwing things up so I went with alien), but I started to like it too much as a human towards the middle, so it just came out as a weirdly drawn person. I think I ended up being influenced by Zinc's picture of Queen Amidala, so she turned out being queen-like. I hope he doesn't mind. She ended up just being a weird, disproportionate human with a weird hat.She had some pretty features and I decided against turning her into an ugly alien.

Looks like an Egyptian idol of sorts that you might find in a tomb :) Really creative and interesting, I like how it turned out.

Was doodling around and found some interesting shapes for a character. Looks kind of like something from Dark Crystal.

You're another one who has great imagination and talent. When it stops drawing, hit the screen refresh button. When it does a box will ask if you want to restore your last image..hit yes and everything comes back working.

Oh wow! This is cool as hell, I like that it's somehwat sketchy, and the designs on the helmet and such are great! Kind of looks like some sort of turtle-kin. Great drawing. |

Trying some more in this very opaque, loose style from a photo of Tilda Swinton (very beautiful actress). I'm not sure I can pull it off this time.- Couldn't really pull it off this time. I ended up repainting it with a focus on details instead and did a value study; pretty much a failure since I couldn't do it the way I intended.

Thanks all for the comments. I have mixed feelings about this one - I don't completely dislike the end result (though I ran out of space before I got started on the hair again), but it was really a cop out as I reverted back to a style that was comfortable to me. I wanted to paint once again in the style of my earlier picture, and this time things just didn't seem to click like they did before. I think part of it is because I went even bolder this time with the contrast - the last time I built up more gradually with the tones. I also think it was a mistake to go with a celebrity before I had this technique down since I started becoming too concerned about having some sense of likeness (the last one doesn't resemble the person in the photo, but that didn't bother me since I didn't know who he was and didn't have a very good feel for how he looked). That also made me start thinking more about lines again which is something I wanted to avoid. The last one also had very prominent shadows and I could feel the form coming out of them even when I was just painting with two colors. I ended up redoing most of this picture and became a slave to the photo again. I'm going to have to keep trying harder before I can get this technique down.

This picture drew my attention for three reasons. 1: I have the same type of dog. 2: I had a cat named Mr. Stinky. 3: It's really good. =D Nice job. |

Experimenting with different techniques of painting - trying to paint more and more loosely with less regard for accuracy and also trying not to use small detail brushes until later. Used a reference with different colors and weaker lights.Shoot I stuck this image in the wrong section. It was supposed to go in intermediate. I've asked Maiko if it could be moved. Sorry about that.

Reminds of Doze Green's work a littlle but more sketchy and structured.
