How layers work.
- Layers can be thought of as clear sheets of plastic that you draw or paint on. Each layer is independent of the other, and their order can be changed.
- The main use for layers is being able to paint behind something without changing it. This is essential for coloring lineart, but is also useful for seperating the foreground, midground, and background.
- Layers can also be useful for transparency. For example, if your drawing had a ghost in it, you could have the ghost on its own layer and set it to half opacity. (Opacity is the opposite of transparency.) This is also useful for lighting effects.
- Keep in mind, however, that more layers usually means bigger file size.

Adding layers.
In Oekeki-Shi, each drawing starts out with a default of three layers. Usually that is all you need, but if you need to add a layer, click the Menu button in the layers window. Lascaux starts with just one layer. To add layers in Lascaux, simply click the button under the word Edit on the left.

Changing layer order.
After selecting the layer you want to move, drag it in the direction you want to move it.

Hiding/showing layers.
To hide or show a layer in Oekeki-Shi, click on the circle to the right of its name in the layer window. To hide or show a layer in Lascaux, click on the V to the left of its name in the layer list.

This was a good idea. ^^ So many people don't know how to use layers, and it definately helps. Great hand! I wish I could draw hands... TT-TT

Oh wow! I really like this for some reason. I love your shading. The different sizes in lineart makes it look awesome. Nice stuff.

Actually, I love Math, and his brother Logic. They are good friends of mine.

Once, my little brother left an extra-credit math puzzle in my car. It showed a large square made of smaller squares, each of which was a different size. It gave you only the size of the square in the middle and asked if it was possible to get the size of the whole thing (the proportions were intentionally distorted a little so that you couldn't use a ruler). I showed it to a friend who had already graduated and was teaching high school math, and he said it wasn't possible. But I persisted that it was, and figured it out a few weeks later.

I'm flattered that this reminds anyone of Icat's work. It was just a doodle before I went to bed. Maybe soon I'll do a "for real" sky.
staci (Jul 18, 2004)
whatchoo talkin bout willis?
this is a very 'for real' sky...
the tree has great form and detail; in my opinion it couldnt get any better, even if you spent 3 hours on it
its very painterly and quickies are the best sometimes
LEELEE (Jul 18, 2004)
I love this!
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jul 18, 2004)
I love this. I still like to lie lay on my back (whatever) in the grass or on the beach or wherever and look at the clouds. My daughter and I think this looks like you are in the mountains and looking up at the clouds. I have no idea where Dino got math out of that, but I hate math. Strange thing is I always like ppl who are good at it, though. Wonderful picture.

this is a very Cloxyish face... I like... I agree, those tablet users have it too easy... if I had one, maybe I could use the hand I REALLY write with... but why would I wanna do that?
Knockoff (Jul 9, 2004)
Hahaha, This is great Zach. Still reminds me of Zeps work.
diver2026 (Jul 9, 2004)
Yes - the mouse definitly favors the right handed folks - I've tried to use my left hand with it, It's just not comfortable, but I dont mind a little extra challenge (or the extra excuse for shaky lines)
emmamommalag (Jul 17, 2004)
LOL! Funny one, Zack. It's clearly legible here.

At least htey'll be really cool nightmares. This is just neat Zack. He looks so sinewy.
DMV (Jul 5, 2004)
This reminds me of "Eddie" from Iron Maiden. You have a cool style:)
Aubrey (Jul 5, 2004)
That's really cool Zack, kinda freaky with the veins dangling off of the muscles and all lol. Bravo!
laurael (Jul 5, 2004)
Freakin' scary, Zack. I'd hate for something like 'this' to be after 'me'!

Hmm... expect more of these.

edit: 1mb already from just 4 layers? Good grief.
The next one won't be quite so blurry.

edit: It looks a little better shrunk down 50%. There.

emmamommalag (Jun 12, 2004)
Yes, it's a lovely picture. Love the sunbeams coming down between the trees.
laurael (Jun 12, 2004)

My character for the collab battle. More detail here than would be prudent in the battles themselves.

edit: Sorry about being absent for the last week and a half... the internet connection at my apartment complex got fried by a lightning storm and the lazy bums hadn't gotten it working again until just today.

hope you like sketchy lines, 'cause I like being lazy
Knockoff (Jun 30, 2004)
Haha there Fine Zach....
w00t. Haven't seen anything from you in a little while.
This is nice. The colors are great, they work well with the character. There like (cold) colors.
That weapon looks pretty sweet. (Looks like it could hurt a few people.
davincipoppalag (Jun 30, 2004)
Welcome home zack! So when are these highly vaunted battles going to happen..I saw two or three start pics
and nothing since.....did it fizzle?

Originally inspired by the song Yuki Satellites by Radix. The song is legally free to download, so check it out.

edit: I feel like starting another drawing but don't have space in my studio, so out this goes. If youse peoples like it enough I'll bother myself with working on it some more.

if you like boys and robots, you should watch The Iron Giant. Now, I care little for that boy, but that robot is the best ever! He is like the epitomy of robots.
Zack (Jun 17, 2004)
Yeh, that's one of my favorite movies, not only for the storytelling, but also the animation... the animation is fantastic.
davincipoppalag (Jun 18, 2004)
This can be cool if you zackyize it and finish! I've seen some of the Iron Giant and I agree , it's very good animation.
jord (Jun 18, 2004)
oohh... this is great... and it does indeed evoke the atmosphere of the iron giant

Bloody optical mouse. I shall destroy it.

(Edit) BTW it isn't supposed to look like he's hanging himself, contrary to Cellular belief.

I command you not to comment on this. Yes! Victory!

reminds me of that book, the delicious fig or something like that... yeh, well the art looks the same
fleeting_memory (May 23, 2004)
this looks really cool-first there are the awsome shoes then there is the great attention to lighting-interesting challenge with drawing a shadow of something above the ground
emmamommalag (Jun 14, 2004)
Hmmm, I missed this one. I like it. Looks like his shadow fell off as he was levitating.
