Yeah, my quick drawings were lame, but I rather like the picture itself, so I thought I'd give it a go.

49 minutes...that's ridiculously long!
dorothyblueeyes (Feb 16, 2011)
Not really that long; I just did 2 hrs. 19 minutes, cause I'm so out of practice, it takes longer.I like this, but I thought it was finished, and that the loss of a mouth, was "woman without freedom of speech", looks good to me.

Doodlally Challenge
Dr.Moony (edited Feb 14, 2011)
Hey everybody. It's that time again. I coded something new today. I call it the Doodlally Challenge and it's a site where we all compete against each other to copy one reference within one minute as good/interesting/skillful/smart/fun as possible. So this is the site I created: I created the whole thing in a day, so there might be some issues. If you encounter any, post here or pm me or email. It's also possible to write comments over there, so we...

This is from a picture which belongs to an old friend. I think the photo was taken in Shanghai.. probably. I haven't asked him.

a bit less shit than I expected.
The vagueness sells it. I can't draw straight forward a somewhat realistic face(were talking no ref). I always have to draw a vague mess and then pick out parts which look right. Almost always when I feel like knowing how to draw a certain part going in and making the change often makes it worse. A bit frustrating. Dunno what it would take to work on the details without fucking it up.

I'm currently trying to memorize one portrait of a girl(photo) to have a mental reference. My guess is that it's a bit too friggin hard to actually construct a head three dimensionally, we usually just draw 2d impressions. That's why everybody fails so hilariously when trying to draw a head facing up or down. but it's been pretty depressing so far trying to remember it....yay. It better be worth it

yeah some...but it's very basic and whacky.
What does it matter how hard it is to recognize a face from an odd angle when you have a 3D representation in your mind that you reliably can rotate and use as your reference?
I do that 'draw person from a different angle' thing from time to time. The clash I have with it is that you usually can't really verify your accuracy unless you have a photo of that other angle with the same light. Without checking with reality you'll probably end up learning it wrong which is something I'd like to avoid.
shults (Feb 9, 2011)
Good point, but it's only valid if you see a head from all angles. Only then can you assume to have a 3D representation. Otherwise, (like in photos) you can 'complete' the missing parts in your mind, but there's no guarantee for it to be accurate.
marcello (Feb 10, 2011)
practice practice practice. draw 50 faces a day. you'll get better.
Dr.Moony (Feb 10, 2011)
that's nicely oversimplified.

heh heh, I like it for the sense of humour the most, and yes, he caught the spirit of Lawrence, i would say.I actually hate Lawrence Welk's show,I groaned every time it was on; us oldsters want THE BEATLES!!!HA HA.

Yeah, that overly critical critique of this poster is way off; this is not brain surgery,or rocket science,, guys. Those people actually get PAID for what they do!!I don;t think people on this site should be overly harsh on artists. So, everyone on the site is good, as far as I'm concerned. (Did you know, one person in 6 billion people, can earn a living off creative work?) Years ago,I saw very successful commercial artists, and they got paid CRAP, and treated like shit. And they were the successful ones. Fine artists had it even worse. Yeah, you're right, we need a sense of humour here, we just do art to enjoy it. That's what it's meant for. (my opinion.)

Well not for nothin,,but I'm 62, I've had no art training, and I don't aspire to be the next Michaelangelo, so I draw for fun when I have any time and/or energy, so I don't have the passion of youth for any of it. Feel free to ignore, as the others do, don't bother me any. I comment on what I like, or looks good to me. feel free to ignore those too. No problem. Oh.. and. hey.. lighten up..you;ll enjoy life more
pawillie (Jan 28, 2011)
Dr Moony talks as if he expects everyone to have or be in school to get an art degree in order to not offend artists on this site. I enjoy drawing on line and have not had any art training and there are a few people here that like to point that out. I see what Dave is trying to do and I dont see the problem with it

Just watched '127 Hours' a couple nights ago. This drawing captures the feeling of that amazing, horrifying true story.

Love the texture. It looks as though he or she has fallen down in the earth and is stuck in a cold, dark place.

This is my first pixel art ever. I've tried plenty of times, but it's so contrary to how I normally draw that I've never actually finished before. It sure does take a long while though, since I'm basically clicking pixels one by one on my laptop trackpad or sometimes a mouse.

I liked setting up the palette and tried to give it a range of values with only 3-4 colors in a set and 3 sets (brown, green, blue grey). You can see that I kept changing the palette a lot of times, right up to the end. The third to the last revision has the full palette that I actually used, not counting the background color that I set to be the same as the page background so it'd look transparent. 11 colors in total, including the (transparent) background. The final has 8 layers, not counting a few layers that I deleted before I was done.
