...and life goes on...
laurael (Mar 11, 2004)
Thanks you two. I was going to do that DBA, but reached the limit quite fast with this one. Wish they would up that a bit for this board, as it really doesn't have enough when you use layers.
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Mar 11, 2004)
Yes, I know. 800kb (or even 6 or 7) for this board and 1mb for the advanced board would be perfect. Everyone would be ecstatic.
davincipoppalag (Mar 11, 2004)
great idea..great draw laureal... I agree.more contrast between the sky and the birds... also.. I would like to see more random sizes and colors of the twigs in the nest.. I love what you have, but it looks a bit unnatural being all of smooth uniform sizes of the same color..(almost like they have a nest supplies departement at Home Depot lol) ..I am sure one of the mods will move this up to a bigger space board for you..its a great pic and deserves to be finished!
laurael (edited Mar 13, 2004)
"Ha ha davinci...you are 'so' funny..."(O.M.) That's what I was going for(sarcasm) Wow...home depot sales are great, aren't they? |

DeadlyBlondeArcher (Mar 11, 2004)
Hey, does he work in Yoakum? El Campo? Kinda looks like a lobster. I love how your stuff has this 3-d look and so much depth, without even a bg, i always wonder how you do it.
davincipoppalag (Mar 11, 2004)
one of these times..you have to tell how you make these figures look like this.. I love that This is apparently Ferndinand the Fence cutter? lol love these
DinoFlorist (Mar 12, 2004)
Well this is actually the bootcutter from the picture you saw earlier. I had to make an advertisment for class so I drew the pictures on here. As far as making them, I put colors on the paper and then I use real small brush size and just draw like I would normal but wit the blend on.
davincipoppalag (Mar 12, 2004)
...I will try it..but I bet it doesnt look like yours! lol |

I also have a dog, who is such a beautiful dog! She is a Great Dane and I love her to pieces(I chop her up and cook her all the time!) OMG yes ^O^ Now after seeing Axil's glass drawllllling I must indeed draw the wuff-wuff to follow up the meow-meow, if you catch my drift(drifting ever so slowly down a river somewhere) oh yeah and thanks everybody, if there is anything you have to say....
fleeting_memory (edited Mar 14, 2004)
ooo I kinda like this-its very modern artish...butt the shading on the nose bugs me a lil but I like the colors you used. Sheesh all these non-cat people-how sad, cats rock you poor people are just deprived, don't get me wrong I love puppies too but cats are my babies! *eeeeeeeee* *stands between DBA and a cat she is about to shoot* |

good one thug! great shadows and light..I like the textures you did on the scarf, coat and hat too... and the expression is priceless!
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Mar 11, 2004)
He's so cute! That scarf looks so real... I just want to reach out and snuggle it up around his neck! He has a bit of a Norman Rockwell feeling to him... love this.
PinkuEspeon (Mar 14, 2004)
O.O He looks evil! O.O;; Well... anyways, it's still an admirable piece! Two thumbs up! ^_^

Ruins at sunset. I have seen so many of these... my favorites are the Whitehouse Ruins in Arizona and the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde in Colorado.
dixielandcutie (Mar 11, 2004)
wow, the detail in the stones and sky...omg dba. i agree thug, awesome piece after awesome piece...you are just rockin socks all over the place ;p
alwaysLearning (Mar 11, 2004)
<melts> Excuse me, I'm moving into your pictures. At least when I'm having dental work... ...I have favourite mental places I go when they're working on my teeth (I don't tolerate local anaesthetics, so I *have* to use those sorts of techniques...), and your pictures have now become the first paintings (by *any* artist) to make the list. You may take that as the high compliment that it is, and well-earned, at that, Cindy. <smiles with sincere admiration>I've never looked out from the Mesa Verde ruins at sunset (those ladders are scary enough in daytime, and that's BEFORE I became acrophobic), but this looks just like the kind of thing I'd expect to see, so you've got the feel you describe, dead on, with this picture. *impressed smile* I hope there are more pieces of this type coming... ...and at this rate, I may have to ask you if I can save some to my hard drive, as I'm not sure I can stand to part with them! *wistful grin* On the useful suggestion side of things, I thought you might like to think about using a glow similar to the one you used on the horse and cowboy, to edge the ruins (should you work on this further locally, or do more pieces like this, since I see that this one is marked as "finished"), and give an indication of the light pouring up and over their edge, from the sunset, because I think it would have that same almost magical effect that it did in the cowboy picture. And, as an extremely minor detail, there's a stone that appears to be sticking out toward us, about 3 rows below the bottom of the window on the viewer's left, beneath the middle of the window, which gives me the feeling that it's about to pop right out of the wall toward me, and cause the window to cave in. It could be intentional, it might not, and it's perfectly believable either way, but it gives me a loss of the feeling of tranquility that this piece otherwise conveys, and instead creates a sense of dramatic tension, as though something in me is waiting for the remainder of the wall and window arch to collapse. I thought you might want to play with that, in future works, since your paintings tend to have a very emotional impact on the viewer (to judge from my own response and that of others), making that emotional effect into one more tool in your palette, so to speak. P.S. to thug: Cindy is not alone in putting in 3-5 hours at a stretch on a single piece of artwork; I do it too, (and though I don't compare my work to hers, so do many of the *other* artists whose work I like) and that's not allowing for interruptions. How did you think that her pieces got so good, anyway? *grin* Good artists aren't *necessarily* speed demons (though they can be); what makes a good artist, IMHO, is that they're just good at being expressive, whatever their medium of choice, regardless of how long it takes them -- which is reassuring to those of us who take longer on our own pieces, even when we aren't at Cindy's skill level. :) I hope this comment has been useful, and not *too* long, this time... *worried look* I tried to cut out anything not directly related to *this* picture. I don't see anything left I can leave out.
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Mar 11, 2004)
About 5 hrs in one sitting is an avg. for me here... some I worked on for 8 or more at once, because they usually take up so much space that I can't get back in to edit w/out asking for more space.Gee, thanks alwayslearning... maybe you should have a job as a writer? lol And yeah, the rocks that appear to be about to come out are intentional... these things are barely standing as it is and crumbling as we speak. I'm so glad that someone recieves the feeling I try to impart when I paint (or draw). That's what makes it satisfying. This place has inspired me to bust my real paint out again.
Kasha (Mar 12, 2004)

This is a blue heron, painted based on the one in this photo, which I found on the web. I started out working without an immediate visual reference, but the bird I created looked nothing like a Blue Heron, so I started over, working from the photo. For that matter, any useful comments and suggestions will be gratefully appreciated -- not that I would say no to compliments, either... *grin* Edit: I specifically chose the reference photo that I did, because I liked the soft, painted look of the heron in the photo itself. So, this piece will still have a soft look, just a more detailed soft look, when finished. Any suggestions on technique to achieve that look would be very welcome. :)
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Mar 10, 2004)
This is very pretty... it already is taking on a soft, but detailed look, which is what I like. I looked at your reference photo and so far you are getting there. You can have alot of fun playing with the light that is happening there - you should take advantage of that. I don't know if this applet has an airbrush (I use lascaux only) but if it does, it works nicely for things you want to have a *soft* look to, and then for the details you can come back with a regular brush or antialias brush and add them. It looks like you are using a light opacity, which is good for soft. Keep layering light opacities and then add your detail and I think you'll get what you want. (btw - you have a nice grin! lol)
alwaysLearning (edited Mar 10, 2004)
Believe it or not, this *is* me trying to condense my comments. *sigh* On the other hand, there's only so much I can compress into so few words, and I don't see much point in asking for comments without giving information on what I'm looking for. I also try to give people a chance to know who they're talking to, when I join a new site.I *am* going for something stylized, not photo-exact, so I'm not trying for exact feathers -- but at the same time I am also trying for something that's got the look and feel of that photo, since that's what made me choose it. So, the question stands, if anyone has any suggestions as to how to get that look and feel a bit more closely on the wings. Regardless, I still appreciate the comment, feedback, and suggestion. Edit: Thanks for the suggestion, DBA! I'm still getting used to the options on the different applets, and there are some things I seem to be able to get Shi-Painter to do that I can't seem to manage on Lascaux, yet -- but there *is* an airbrush option, I'll have to give it a try, next painting session. *smile* Thanks again!
Ari (Apr 8, 2004)
Groovy heron! ^_^ I like how you drew the outline, it makes it look like an inked watercolour ^_^ *applauds*

You wouldn't worry so much about what other people thought of you if you realized how seldom they do.
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Mar 10, 2004)
Yes, sleep eludes me for long periods of time, which is why I draw all night here lately. And I know you aren't kidding about the hallucinations - it took between 4 and 5 days with no sleep before I had them, but boy is that scary. My name is not an acronym, it's Cindy. You can just call me that. I mean call me Cindy, not *that*. lol Your comment was very helpful, cheered me up, and the cowboy and I like the drawing much better this way. :)
alwaysLearning (Mar 11, 2004)
Thanks, Cindy, I'm pleased ta meetcha! :) I'm even more pleased that you found the comment helpful, and that it cheered you up. I know what it's like to have too many nights when sleep eludes you, and a friendly comment can make a world of difference to me, so I try to aim for saying something both friendly and useful.FYI, my hallucinations tended toward the bizarrely entertaining, the sole convincing one being <flourish of trumpets> a cardboard box. It's a funny story, message me sometime when you're bored or need a laugh, and I'll tell it to you. :)
PinkuEspeon (Mar 12, 2004)
Wow! This is beautiful, DBA! I love the sunset sky! And, I think that the horse's shadow is sooo cute! ^_^
