you did a great sky there mizz cindy.. love the glow on the edges of the cowboy and the horse ...he kinda looks like hes only got one leg though....it's probably just me..maybe put some small spurs on his boots and offset them a bit so you can tell there are two feet? beautiful stuff you do...
I guess I see whatcha mean, pops, but he's doin the cowboy squat and his boots are pretty much flush together - how a cowboy balances... lol when he gets tired up there his butt will go to his heels and he'll sit on them for a while before he gets up. :)
dba, this looks like a marlboro man ad. lol. aside from that though, makes ya just wanna find the nearest cliff, dangle your legs, and look around. the silhouettes are awesome! nice work, you rock! :)

lol @ davin. Agreed, Icats. I think I like this one enough to just maybe go in and fix that later. Think I was looking just to balance it compositionally when I placed his head. Thank ya. (Did you know that donkeys kill more people annually than plane crashes?)
First of all, this is gorgeous!!! It *REALLY* makes me miss the deserts of the US SW, where I was born. *smile*
Secondly, lots of people in that area actually DO use donkeys, or even burros, which are so short that a tall man might have to scrunch up his legs to keep them from trailing on the ground, while riding - or he can put his feet down, and allow the burro to walk right on out from under him. So, I'd say, keep the equine whatever variety and size you like - it looks good, and you could give equally valid reasons for any size you choose to make it.
Third, I can tell I'm tired, because my first two thoughts are "but the Marlboro man looks a bit grislier than that, these days... ...as he became an anti-smoking advocate due to terminal lung cancer some time ago, and I think he's dead now...", and various permutations of reigns/reins/rains and tapers/tapirs -- my favorite being the snuffling forest animal with a crown on his head, and the cloudburst of insectivorous mammals. *giggle*
So, if this is about how we wouldn't care so much what people thought of us, if we knew how infrequently they did so, does that make this the "horse with no name"? Either way, I'm sure he'd feel good to get out of his reins... *grin* ...or maybe away from the tapir storm. *LOL*
Oh yeah, last comment, on the size thing - the horses that tend to have the surest footing in that kind of terrain actually tend to be the smaller ones, anyway -- more akin to the Welsh Mountain Pony than the Quarterhorse (besides, that looks more like 1/5 of a horse to me, anyway). Quarterhorses aren't fit for much other than farm work and carrying knights in full armour, they're BIG. An Appaloosa, Arabian, or Barb would be a better choice for a vaquero (at least, one who didn't insist on climbing up mesas or down canyons on his horse), at least if I remember my cowboy lore.
Oh golly, GOTTA sleep now, I have this urge to see a painting of a cowboy with "hot rivet syndrome" (the reason Levi's stopped putting a crotch rivet in their jeans, formerly a form of entertainment involving a greenhorn and a campfire... *grin*). I warned you about the silly comments, right?
But in all seriousness, this was too gorgeous to pass without commenting on it, and y'all didn't particularly help keep my state of mind from wandering down silly street, so to speak. *smile*
Edit: One last thing niggles at me - the lighter blue cloud on the upper right. I can't find a source of illumination for it which wouldn't give it some of that tangerine/orangey-red sunset glow, though the rest of the sky seems perfect (and I didn't even notice this part at first). I figured, though, that having noticed it, and having already rambled on at you at this length, I should try to make a more useful comment on this, since it's the only thing I've noticed that hasn't already been commented on, and that might be worth tweaking if you go back and touch up anything about this picture.
I guess all that time staring at sunsets might actually prove useful, after all, and while I can't create a work like this myself at this point (though I hope that practise might someday let me get closer to this quality), I'd feel good if I were able to help the artist who *can* create a work of such beauty, to make it just that little bit better. :)

Hah! You made me laugh, alwayslearning person whoever you are. Quarter horses make pretty good cutting horses... (ranch horses) and donkeys do kill coyotes and scare away mountain lions around here, and I did decide to leave the horse the height he is after pondering on it because if it were actually totally wrong, it would have bothered me when I looked at the picture even if I didn't know why I was feeling bothered, and I'm not bothered at all when I look at it. I just wish I were there with him. :) Of course I could have made him into a clydesdale, with his head up in that one gray cloud, but then that wouldn't go over too well prolly. I think the horse is standing on the trail that goes around the side of the ledge that the cowboy is squatting on. lol Thanks for the rambling comment. We should probably both drink less coffee and sleep more. Come to think of it, I had less than two hours last night.

A) I don't drink coffee, or anything caffinated, believe it or not -- but I also haven't been sleeping enough, and I am verbose to start with. Get me tired, and I get even more polysyllabic and verbose, and if I get tired enough, the broad Texas drawl kicks in. I'm told it's quite entertaining, although these days I try to sleep before the 40 hour point where the hallucinations kick in (no kidding). Given these comments, though, I'm betting that you can see why I don't muck about with my body chemistry on purpose, beyond what the doctor orders. *wry chuckle*
B) I have a name, honest... <grin> ...but since it's not the one on my art site, you might as well use my handle, "Willow" -- at least until I see how many of you I tick off by being too wordy. <wink>

Yes, sleep eludes me for long periods of time, which is why I draw all night here lately. And I know you aren't kidding about the hallucinations - it took between 4 and 5 days with no sleep before I had them, but boy is that scary. My name is not an acronym, it's Cindy. You can just call me that. I mean call me Cindy, not *that*. lol Your comment was very helpful, cheered me up, and the cowboy and I like the drawing much better this way. :)

FYI, my hallucinations tended toward the bizarrely entertaining, the sole convincing one being <flourish of trumpets> a cardboard box. It's a funny story, message me sometime when you're bored or need a laugh, and I'll tell it to you. :)
