I am hoping this one looks allright. In the midst of drawing it my kids were acting up and I guess emotions about other things hit and I kinda got all emotional. :( Anyways off to decide whether to go to bed or draw something else.

I am loving the colours you've used in this! the peachy orange of the nipples is so beautiful against the deep purple and soft gray-blue of the sky. It's one of my favourite 'poses', too. I have a similar drawing I've done over and over again. It looks simple...but it ain't! The soft shading on the face, neck and side are lovely. If you do any more on it, maybe some shading on the under side of the hip? Beautiful skin tones.
IkariIreuL (Jan 24, 2006)
looks peacefully, and I agree [ said above ] about the shading.

Ok yeah I suck. But figured it looked ok anyway. I kept shading and reshading and doing it again.
terracotta (Jan 24, 2006)
I'm liking the skin colour with the shade of lipstick--dramatic. Liquids are hard. Could I suggest that you might find it helpful to just draw a single drop of water on skin or some surface so that you can study how the highlight, shadow and transparency work together to give the effect you're after? It's tough to work on a portrait as complex as this and figure out a technique like drawing liquid at the same time--recipe for frustration. I like the painterly brushstrokes you get with your skin tones. |

Quickie is too similar to her ref. What use is a drawing if it's simply a copy of the truth? A copy of the truth is just that, the truth, and lies are a dozen times more interesting. What the heck does Allen Ginsberg want? Why is America so easy to generalize? Why do we believe everything we see on the television? Can't we think for ourselves anymore? Could we ever. What will become of our computers when the Electricty takes off her clothes I can not think of what I would rather want a toothbrush or a toothpick why do i think so much when i draw and why can't i stop thinking now im okay
terracotta (Jan 23, 2006)
I think this is a very effective picture. I tell myself that I copy the truth in order to teach myself to really see something, not just glance at it, make a snap judgement, store it in a vague memory or dismiss it. I love to draw but I do not have a natural facility for noticing visual details and storing them in my 'mind's eye'. Work that is copied or referenced directly from a source is rarely something that will elicit an emotional response from me, though I may admire the technical skill displayed. I want to believe there is a stage or phase in one's development of skill where the urge to 'speak' or express one's feelings or thoughts melds with one's technical abilities and something I think of as Art happens. I'm not there.
Renuar (Jan 23, 2006)
it's a great drawing, with a nice idea behind it.
mx (Jan 23, 2006)
as terracotta mentioned between the technical skill vs. expression....i have a great conflict between the two myself. I want to do the realism as this great pic, yet, i wanna be freed from the technical restrictions. I have not found my style either and its causing a great deal of frustration i must say.Great technical piece though for the time spent
HunterKiller_ (Jan 24, 2006)
This is a quickie? Wow, amazing. Very well done, you've captured the alert mood of the bird perfectly. |
