This is my favorite piece by you. i think it's terrific... very pretty. i don't know if you used a reference, and whether or not it was in the reference, but the sky would looks EVEN better if there was just a tiny bit more of a presence to it. i can see what look like clouds, and the sky is gorgeous, but i have to strain, and a lot of that beauty is nearly lost because of it (at first i thought the sky was just an orange gradient)
EDIT: by the way, mazi, is this supposed to be called "Close to the World? or is it "Close the world"? anyway, you wouldn't even have to do anything complicated to make the clouds stand out a little more... al you'd have to do is take an orange brush on about 40-80 opacity and go over that darker orange area towards the bottom 3rd of the piece.. if you're afraid of ruining it, you can always load the picture in the applet, press "print screen" on your keyboard, open MS paint and select "edit>paste", then save it as a png. that way, you can mess around with the picture as much as you want, and IF you mess it up, you'll still have the original.
yeah i tried clouds but they always look like what my art teacher called 'sheep clouds' and i have yet to master the full-blown fluffy billowey clouds so i figured it was just better to hint at it a bit. and there was reference to different parts of lain (theres a lot of shots of wires) but not an exact copy. and i was looking off a video file as opposed to a screen cap and im not sure i could find the exact frame i was looking at.
Clouds work best with a tablet, set your brush really big, set the flow low, and enable tablet pressure on both size and opacity, then you just kinda stroke along an approximate brush shape. Then you add shadows. It's crucial but not necessarily obvious. This shot is daytime, but still clouds: http://www.unm.edu/~cello/maya/mast-colored.jpg
Dang it, after seeing that, I wish I had taken the time to do clouds in my crappy self portrait. Oh well, I hate self portraits anyway. This is an amazing piece of work, man.
wow. thats just amazing. I especially like the little touches, like the barely-visible white rim on the bottom of the transformer. they really make it seem real.
