renire (Jul 7, 2005)
why do you do it in a faint coulor, then go over it in black?
sephiroth54321 (Jul 7, 2005)
I draw my rough on layer 0, then I do my lineart on layer two. I fade out the lines so I can see my lineart better.

I notice that someone has all ready pointed out that this is a pre-existing fanart taken from Blizzard's World of Warcraft fanart section. I'm not sure if you assumed that titling your drawing the same as the original image (which can be seen here http://www.blizzard.com/inblizz/fanart/images/screens/ss076.jpg ) was that same as giving credit to the original artist.. but you really should mention when you're drawing from someone else's work. Someone could easily take offense to you not mentioning the artist or even think you are trying to take credit for the drawing as your own piece.
Just thought I'd mention and link the image. Here it is again http://www.blizzard.com/inblizz/fanart/images/screens/ss076.jpg

yeah, I really liked the picture so I decided to draw it. I didn't realize that it was that big of a deal to take it. But now at least there is some credit since you provided the link, so I suppose there's no problem there....

Memmin, I think linking the reference once in the same post is more than sufficiant.
Posting it a second time is just a little ignorant.
Besides, at no point did he claim it was an original piece and I highly doubt the original artist cares that it was drawn here.
You also pointed out that it was already stated that he is doing a piece of fanart, which makes your comment redundant.
Shanghai (Jul 22, 2005)
actually, for most artwork, it's just assumed that it's original art unless stated otherwise, not the other way around. So it is necessary to specify when something isn't.

Anyways, I tend to feel that it's easy to get caught up in trying to perfect each small area one at a time, but that it's probably more important (in most styles, the pre-raphaelites did it differently) to work on the whole image at once and worry about the details later, if they're needed. It's cool though that you were willing to spend that much time and effort to complete this.
sephiroth54321 (edited Jul 22, 2005)
Yeah, I usually don't really have anything better to do. Besides, I try to put as much effort as I can into my drawings, because I know that's what counts. I was pleased with the shading on it, since it's something I've been working on.....
kejoco (edited Jul 22, 2005)
No, I don't think its necessary.
He's obviously drawing here for the enjoyment of drawing, and if he copied the drawing no harm is done to anyone. He's not profiting from someone else's idea, he's using it to improve his skills. Does it really make a difference to you whether or not he got the idea from somewhere else??
On a site that is dedicated to original artwork, fine, he should say if he had a reference. If he was submitting it to a site that was judging the work, fine, he should say if he had a reference. If he was submitting it to a site he was getting some type of payment or reward for the drawing, fine, he should say if he had a reference. But on this site, where none of the above apply.....
to quote the great elders
"who gives a flying fuck?"

and I'm sorry I haven't actually commented on the drawing yet, but that is some smooth line work you got there sep...a suggestion from me would be to try varying the width of the lines, doing so would give your work some demension. As it is now with the lines being the same thickness it makes it look a little flat.
sephiroth54321 (Jul 22, 2005)
yeah I know, I realized that after it was too late <:)
oh yeah, no need to get steamed over this, no big deal, you've proved your point...but I see what you mean....
Shanghai (edited Jul 22, 2005)
I'm only mentioning it because you made a point of him not claiming it to be an original artwork, and my point is that weither the claim is made or not that it's assumed by most people that it is. Just calm down.

As for why it matters; people often comment not just on the work but also the idea. Knowing where the idea came from (e.g. I was inspired by a movie, another artist, a philosophy, etc.) is important to be able to do that. Commenting on ideas is as important as commenting on finished products because, in many cases, the idea comes before the art and the art isn't even going to be started until after the idea is.
sephiroth54321 (Jul 22, 2005)
true....
Anna (Jul 22, 2005)
People rarely even say where their ideas came from here at 2draw. So who cares? If seph specifically said "I drew and came up with this idea by myself" (Which some people HAVE done here and been caught) Then yeah, that IS pretty wrong. But seph did nothing of the sort. Relax people. Geezus.
sephiroth54321 (Jul 22, 2005)
alright, let's actually comment on my drawing instead of arguing about references? Everything you all are saying sounds reasonable, but couldn't you take it to the forums?
SimplyX (Jul 23, 2005)
I would like to commend you on your effort put through this long process. At least you decided to put quality first rather than quantity and ignoring the 10 hours that state for the duration time. Or was it really 10 hours or a bit off? Seeing the number of revisions you've done, it is obvious that you were persistent in making the lines as crisp and arranged properly just as you've observed on the original picture (or I suppose the reference). A background would be nice too but I suppose making a duplicate of the original is satisfying enough then there is no need to make any more hassle with it. Not really what I call exceptional but acceptable enough for this board, if I say so myself.
sephiroth54321 (Jul 23, 2005)
thanks, I really didn't pay much attention to the ref though, and the timer isn't really off.....most of the extra time in between is just me thinking of what to do next.....
Minty_hippo (Aug 9, 2005)

Thanks....I really would like to take you up on your advice, but I put so much time into this I kinda just feel like leaving it as it is...
