Any answer is fine. I'm just wondering what people think.

Alex-Cooper (Jun 26, 2005)
Art is any human activity which doesn't grow out of either of our species' two basic instincts: survival and reproduction. I've got kind of a broad definition, but that's how i like it.

The conscious use of skill and creative imagination in the production of aesthetic objects or two dimensional renderings.

mazi (Jun 26, 2005)
reproduction isnt artistic?
...so what about lesbo/gay sex? and straight couples using condoms/birth control? :P |
||||
Ceido (Jun 26, 2005)
Art is something I generate when I feel creative.

Nyuusen (Jun 26, 2005)
Somebody spit up on a piece of paper one day and said. "Holy crap that looks cool." So there was art. Materials got less personal.
Okay, maybe not the history, but hopefully the point is gotten. |
||||
Axil62 (Jun 26, 2005)
Mazi, no one cares about lesbian this or gay that anymore, get over it.
|
||||
Nyuusen (Jun 26, 2005)
She did include male and female sex via birth control. ^.^

nekodesu (Jun 26, 2005)
Art would be anything created by a person's imagination and creativity.
|

Xodiak (Jun 26, 2005)
For me, creating art means making something beautiful. Everything that is pleasing to us and we comprehend it by using our senses, is beautiful. To me, sex is art because sex is beautiful. Not all people have the same taste in art. There are different schools, techniques and culctures of art. Some of them are not considered art by many, like kitsch. Although this sometimes looks like an art war, it helps making art diverse and numerous.

yeah i just meant sex without reproduction.. i wasnt being a psycho-feminist. :P
art cant be defined. anything can be art given the right perspective/circumstances. |

DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Jun 27, 2005)
Art is the expression of emotions, or the lack thereof. I believe it's always an attempt to draw something deep from the well inside you and bring it out where the rest of the world can drink part of who you are. Whether it be painting, sculpture, music, literature, architecture... That's my personal definition of it and I'm stickin' to it.
|
||||
Gigandas (Jun 27, 2005)
Art is actually a very broad and varying subject. It's not always about imagination and expressing emotion in every form of art. I think that's more along the lines of "Fine" arts.
|
||||
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jun 27, 2005)
I like the "finer" things.
|
||||
HunterKiller_ (Jun 27, 2005)
Art to me, in general, is the gift to be able to translate ones passions and thoughts and feelings into a medium that others can see.

emmamommalag (Jun 27, 2005)
Art's the guy that blew Gene's machine apart.
|
||||
Truearashi (Jul 26, 2005)
to me art is to create something from inside you (does that make sense?)
therefor art can be so many things ^_^ |

Rather than answering what art is, let me voice on what art isn't: A splatter on a in the middle of a canvas, some quick scribbles on an applet, a pile of foil balls in a baby buggy, the list could go on. Art is something that takes some talent to create, whether learned or latent. Not every picture produced here is art. All of it is expression. All art is expression of some kind, but not all expressions are art. Art should express, or convey some meaning to others. If no one but the artist can determine what something expresses, then he has failed to create art.
That is my general opinion. Well that and, What do you call a guy with no arms or legs hangin' on the wall....? |
||||
Kasha (edited Jul 27, 2005)
All art is expression of some kind, but not all expressions are art. Art should express, or convey some meaning to others. I beg to differ.I think some of my favorite pieces are the ones that make you think and leave you confused, IMO. Eeeh, I won't go into the subject becasue I've gone over it more than 20 times on this site. |
||||
Kloxboy (Jul 27, 2005)
It's all I can do or care to do.
|
||||
Kraisa (edited Jul 27, 2005)
Confusion could be the meaning of the art. So do you think that random scribbles in any medium is art?
|
||||
squee (Jul 27, 2005)
Art to me is letting out my emotions on paper, letting my imagination run free and adding my personality for a finishing touch. To me it's what symbolizing the creator. Art is magic.

two-na (edited Jul 27, 2005)
art is erotic. all that you see is a combination of those you have known and how they have treated you

In response to what "art isn't"...umm I dont' know if you could say it isn't "art", but I'm sure like xod said there are varing degrees of skill, and art is based on judgement/opinion, so to me there is no real deffinition...just create, cause it feels good.
I'd like to think that a successful work of art, could in turn keep the cycle of creation going, whether in thought, feeling, or physical manifestation. Yet many pop artists tried to reject their humanity and create very machine like works. Are art and humanity connected? I dont' know anymore, because many other "animals" create work as well...like gorillas, and elephants. Are beauty and art connected... Again I don't have answers, just questions, but I think that is what allows the arts to flourish that curiosity...man I'm a dork. Anyway have a nice day. |

inatyrb (Aug 1, 2005)
I think art is anything that results in a physical outcome. I mean, like mentioned earlier about sex. Through sex, children are made. Souds weird, but it can be considered and art. Scribbles to one may not be considered art, but it can be. Anything really. This is a tough question to answer. And i can't think of a good answer. So i am stopping where I am. heh.. ^^''

MoonlitShadow (Aug 1, 2005)
Art to me is is a drawing/painting/sculpture/etc., that is pleasing to the eye, and/or invokes deep emotions and/or inspiration.. o.O;; Or at least, that would be good art, that was all three..
|
||||
squee (Aug 2, 2005)
Photography, music, and dance are also parts of art. So far no one has mentioned them. o___o;
|
||||
Noremac (Aug 2, 2005)
art eh?... anything someone puts time or thought into.
|
||||
LisaAnne (Aug 2, 2005)
After reading some more of the responses, I'm wondering do people define art as a quantity/product or is it an action? Also do you think artists have the need to share, or the need to understand? I suppose its a combination, but I think curiosity drives alot of it...for me anyway.
|
||||
Nightmare (Aug 2, 2005)
Art is just another language we can use to share it with others.

Art is colors on something, even if it's just a scribble.

TaCO (edited Aug 3, 2005)
Art is what I love.
I never put any thought into It. I just let it flow, and it calms my mind. Art is what I wake up every morning for. |

I agree with Lisa there.
