Hey, i was wondering what people use out there. I'm really seriously
considering buying a wacom tablet, but i'm not sure how much the size
makes a difference, if it really does i think i'd be able to hold out to
get a really nicely sized one. Do people have any comments, suggestions,
maybe references to some workable cheaper tablets? I can dream
about the 12x18" Intuos 2 tablets.... mmmm... but i won't be able to
afford it for maybe a few months yet. Should i just go out and get a
smaller sized one?
Thanks alot =P

Feel free. Go for it.

I used to have a PenTab. That's all.

If you're serious, go for the larger size, but keep in mind, after the entry level ones, you'll be paying 2x minimum for the next size up. I don't mind my 4x6" much, especially because it takes up a lot of desk space as it is, and even on 1600x1200 it gets pixel precision...
So, if you were doing graphic design/art professionally, you could probably afford and want a larger tablet. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter as long as it works. :-)

check out aiptek's tablets, I paid $150 for a 12x9 compared to wacom's $470 12x9 tablet, its a bargin.. only problem I have with it is that it uses a AAA battery inside the pen but it seems to last a long time.
  icon
marcello (edited Apr 1, 2003)
the battery is mucho lame, it makes it heavy, and considering wacoms don't even have them...

I'm using an Aiptek 12x9 m'self, but the pen really doesn't feel that heavy to me. It's about as heavy as a highlighter or Sharpie. *shrugs* Then again, I've never held a Wacom pen.

I have the smallest wacom tablet, and I love it. XD I really don't think size makes a difference, unless you're working on a PC, as I discovered recently. >_>

6x8 for $150?? You're gettin ripped... get an aiptek.. I have a 6x8 one, and i got it for $90... I don't mind the battery in the pen either.. maybe I just got used to it... I should try a wacom. My aiptek has nad problems in the past, and it's still not working perfectly yet.. :/ hmm...

Hmmm.....I had a go on a Wacom today....It was really small and was pretty crap because of its tinyness.
I'm hoping to get a medium size one because its really easy to draw with the on i have now which is A5 (active space).
The one I have now is a packard bell shitty thing.
I suppose it does the job but something anoying happens when i use it.......
Its hard to explain but......but ill try to.
Say I drew a line from the top of the canvas to the bottom of the canvas.
The cursor moves faster in some horrizontal spaces than others.

Like this.
So if i drew a diagonal line it would look like this.

..\
......\
..........\
.............\
..............\
...............\
................\
...................\
.......................\
...........................\

Ignore the dots
Not as extreme as that but something like that.

Anyone know why?
  icon
supermonkey (Oct 7, 2003)
Yea... for some reason, part of my tablet would only draw wavy lines. It wouldnt draw a straight one. Somehow its fixed itself.. :/

I got a Graphire2 for $90 canadian at Future Shop. I waited for about 2 months for them to go on sale, and it paid off... sort of. :3

Edit: Why so they are... ooh, black. They're not at Future Shop, though, and the price for Graphire2 is back to $160, so I'm satisfied.

marcello (Oct 12, 2003)
probably because the graphire3's are out now

My computer does not have a USB port.
Generally speaking, it seems that drawing tablets that don't plug in to the USB port are no longer in production.
This also substantially limits the amount of cool gadgets I can get for my computer, for example, PSX controller adapters.
I'm fucked.
  icon
method3 (Oct 13, 2003)
On a side note from the main topic, I have to say that PSX adapters r0x0rz. They don't have any good controllers native to the pc besides mouse/keyboard and a few joysticks. The PSX controllers are by far imo the best gamepads ever made. If you don't have USB, you can get some cheap add-on cards for like $20(US) off of newegg.com or something.

psx controllers suck. get a wireless wingman rumble.

*Drool*

Its $3500 though. Only a dream..
  icon
marcello (Oct 13, 2003)
That's actually not as good as an intuos2, it doesn't have as high precision, nor does it support stuff like tilt and penID.
What I want is a tablet pc, basically a notebook with wacom tablet lcd similar to cintiq but I could bring to school or whatever and stuff. anyone want to buy me one?
  icon
supermonkey (Oct 13, 2003)
Anything is better than the tablet I have now. And I need a new monitor...
I'm going to get one of these for my b-day, I hope.

AIPTEk pens tend to break a lot. even if the price is cheaper [ by a lot] than WACOM.
WACOM is still better. might be more expensive, but in the long run, they will not mess up or penm breaking after a month or so. -shrug-

8x6 is a good size.
  icon
marcello (Oct 13, 2003)
I concur. the graphire 3 having two sizes was a good idea.
