If you are drawing merely as a hobby, I recommend the $99 graphire's wacom sells, simply because the cheap and decent. If you can find one for less on ebay or whatever, all the more power to you. If you are looking at them professionally, I suggest researching them a bit, you could easily pay $300 and still need more.

Of course, you can always go for a good $20 optical mouse. Some people draw great artwork with them. It really only requires more time.

hmmm... tablet or mouse?
personally i find it easier to use a mouse ^^;; but maybe that's bcos my tablet is not *that* good
i bought my tablet 2 weeks after i started oekaki-ing. didn't do any research or anything, having a bit of regrets now, so i would advise you to think about it first. buy the best that you can afford :)
otherwise, i would strongly recommend an optical mouse :)

Aiptek has a 12" x 9" for $150 that you can get through most online retailers, i think Best Buy sells it at their store or you can order it through them. Its a great deal for such a large tablet compared to the $470 wacom that is 12"x9". My only gripes with the board though is that the pen requres a AAA battery (which lasts quite a while), whereas Wacom's features a batteryless pen and is also alot more comfortable. Using a wacom tablet for 3 years and going to an Aiptek one was an easy transition though.
But if I had the money, I would buy the Wacom.

My Graphire 2 was 99$ canadian, and it serves me quite well. It came with a mouse that operates on the pad, and like the pen it has no batteries or cords. The batteryless featrue is a confounding but wonderful feature. I would NOT reccoment buying an optical mouse just for drawing, I've tried a couple and they do me just as well as regular mice.

I'd also like to note that a tablet will sadly not make you a better artist, but it will give you the tools to let what skill you do have come out. I draw better with my tablet than I do with a pencil, but by a very narrow margin and mainly because the medium is digital. I've got about 50 dollars of non-digital drawing supplies (Five kinds of erasers. Five!), so I'm not sure what was a better investment.

I still have my good ol' Microsoft Optical and I'm happy with it :) I tried out a $75 tablet but... erm... I actually didn't like it very much... I guess it's just a matter of personal preference.
