whattya tawkin about! that's good wood! maybe in the BG some birch branches and leaves? arent there alot of birches in the west..(seems thats where all the good autumn birch stand pics come from..) this is great
staci (Mar 27, 2004)
the wood is very good! this is quite awesome Lori >.< BG..hm well you could get ambitious and if he is a tree top dwelling bird give it some great depth and perspective by making it seem he is at a height kinda looking down a sloping valley..OR you could make it easy on yourself and give him som foliage although make the leaves close up and big..you could always add a very small blob of color that looks like a bird and blur it so it looks far away..and if he is at the top of a tree maybe lighten the top of the pic (not necessarily draw the sky) and give him a little highlights on the top of his head and back and beak. happy drawing : P

whew Icats.... I dunno about all that! lemme think on all this while I go rip up 30 year old carpet.... see yas for now, and thank you!

grr, I'm so stuck on what to do to this...
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Mar 27, 2004)
This is a vewy tweet picture. I like the bird. If I were you I would put a simple landscape... a pretty blue sky coming about 3/4 down the canvas (pretty blue, but not too terribly bright) and then the terrain, maybe some trees (size them where the perspective works for far away) on the right. Compose it so they angle in to the center of the picture (Making a v with the sky near the center of the pic (but not exactly in the center) that way the composition will work. (If you get tired or bored with it, I would just do the bg a pretty blue and balance the composition with a couple of branches coming from the right of the canvas, maybe a high one and one towards the middle) Okay, hope that helps. (Your memo's crack me up sometimes, btw! :)
LovelyLori (Mar 27, 2004)
thanks dba... hmm... I still gotta think on this... I did the pic just like it was in the book I used, BG and all... but I'm not too thrilled with it's current BG either... something else I think could really bring the bird out more, but it stands out perty good right now too.. hmm... and... I don't wanna ruin the whole thing!
marcello (Mar 27, 2004)
brighter brighter brighter!
if you are worried about screwing it up, make a new layer and use some of the brightening layer blending modes such as additive, screen, divide, lighten, and go over it with some colors, see what works out. That way you can experiment without screwing up the original image.
Otherwise if you want to avoid digital effects, you can merely duplicate the layer and mess around with the duplicate.

I'm doin' it.... I'm addin' another bird.... a different kind of Tanager.....
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Mar 27, 2004)
The sky is a bit too dreary, the clouds a bit too vertical. I would make the sky a prettier blue (something in the cerulean range) and make your clouds more horizontal, scattering across the bg.

*Thumps Lori in the middle of forehead* Nope, you can't quit now, not allowed. If you used layers or did what Marcello suggested, or even if you didn't, just get rid of the second bird. It isn't needed, anyway. The sky is much better, maybe a hair brighter, not much. Put a few clouds in it. Call it done. But don't quit while you hate it. After you've done everything you can do, if you still hate it, then quit. :)

Oh, I see you're out of space. You should ask for more, and edit just one more time. You were so excited about it to begin with, don't lose it at this stage, OKAY??? :)
LovelyLori (Mar 27, 2004)
yeah, you're right, can't quit and be mad at the damn thing... oh that other Tanager really pissed me off...
davincipoppalag (Mar 27, 2004)
use the M1 on the second bird..and sweep him away ..then listen to DBA and Marcello! this is a great picture and if you quit now..we will hunt you down...lock you in a closet and put on Barry Manilow's greatest hits... and play it 24 hours a day until you DO finish!
LovelyLori (Mar 27, 2004)
LOL.... how'd you know he was my favorite when I was a wee little girl? lol I won't quit, just wiatin' on mo space now... runnin' away before I get locked up....

*Duck and Wince* I hope this is okay... I just went with a cerulean blue for the sky because it makes his yellow and orange stand out so nicely, and since it looked like a sort of dead tree branch you had him on, I wanted to stay in tune with what you already had, so I tried to imitate the same palette and balance the composition with another dead tree. (I tried going with a lesser tree/branches on the right side, but it somehow was unbalanced.) I am hoping you will have room to go in and do some detailing on the tree to make the strokes your own, if you want.) I left your layers (except the leaf and bug) Dang, that was nerve racking... I hate thinking I screw up my own stuff, but worrying about screwing up somebody else's is worse! :) Oh, and if you hate it, it won't hurt my feelings if you just go in and take it right back out.
LovelyLori (edited Mar 28, 2004)
noo I don't hate it at all! I think you did a really nice job, THAT's what was bugging me, I was putting so many clouds in... drrr... my leaf sucked too, but I did like that ladybug... I dunno... the new dead tree looks awesome I think, I just feel like there should be a tiny bit more color on that side, so maybe another ladybug? lol... I dunno... I just wanna submit the damn thang... lemme know what ya think about what I said... and good job dba, thanks!!! eep.. there is no more space... callin' it done... and thanks so much for the help!
davincipoppalag (Mar 29, 2004)
This came out very well! The bird is well done Lori and the finish work with the extra branch is just what it needed Mizz Cindy... a worthy effort
LovelyLori (Mar 29, 2004)
