I have a parks brochure from Hawaii with a picture of a small section of lava flow with pretty smoke coming up from it - I turned it into this. Lotsa smoke.
Axil62 (Mar 1, 2004)
I have a McDonalds napkin with that same picture on it...except there is no smoke....or lava...or fire....and the sky part is white.

Had covered up most of the lava rock with my smoke, so undid some of that.
davincipoppalag (Mar 2, 2004)
I like the overall look..but..taint sharp 'nuff for the old guy... :0( (can't believe they make hand soap for mechanics outta that stuff. )...they don't?
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Mar 2, 2004)
I would get out my *sharpener* but I'm not really sure what I'd do to it? It might let me back in.. I don't know.

Yeah, they do. And I use my feet to get the rough spots offa one of those kind of rocks when I bathe, lol.
dixielandcutie (Mar 2, 2004)
hehe, the picture is awesome dba. and man, yall are in a goofy mood today, im lovin it. : )
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Mar 2, 2004)
thanks, dixie, but it just didn't turn out like i imagined it. I might try to do something to it, but I'm not sure what, cuz it's mostly just smoke... I think it's too fuzzy looking even for smoke. hmm.
Consequential_Biopsy (Mar 2, 2004)
Looks alright, but I agree DBA and all others, needs sharpening. Maybe some dark highlighting lines actually on the clouds, as opposed to having one fuzzy colour then the next. And the lava on the bottom right seems to be just floating there, as opposed to being part of the ground underneath. But, great effort, and next time you draw lava and smoke it should be shit hot, so to speak.
davincipoppalag (Mar 2, 2004)
enlarge...put fine edge lines on some of the major cloud areas and carefully blend in one side into the cloud leaving the outside edge crisp..that should help...

Okay, there. This is more like what i imagined. Thanks so much for your kind and honest criticism, Davinci, (It was done in such a way it didn't feel like criticism). It helped me get the picture I wanted. :)

The last two comments weren't there when I went in to revise... but thank yall so much. Just the *not sharp enough* helped! I have a tendency to be so muddy sometimes. Hope this is better.
davincipoppalag (Mar 2, 2004)
signifigantly better..((lava)) lol

Tried to apply some of the *aforementioned* suggestions. I believe that's as far as I can take this particular subject.
Axil62 (Mar 2, 2004)
Now this is a burnin hunk of earth!
davincipoppalag (Mar 2, 2004)
sho nuf iz... love the colors...
marcello (Mar 2, 2004)
It still looks really blurry, I am afraid so far this is one of your weaker pieces. I think it needs more contrast in both color and line. I would probably go in there with a 1x1 or 2x2 antialiased brush and add some details on the rocks and water. Perhaps bring out the yellows in the lava more, but give them more clarity with the antialiased brush (maybe solid red outlining in places).
It is hard to focus on this picture, not only because it is blurry, but I keep wanting to see at least part of it in good focus so your eye is drawn to something...
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Mar 2, 2004)
I totally agree.. blurry and weak. (And confusing to view) What does the antialiased brush do exactly?
marcello (Mar 2, 2004)
well, try drawing with a 1x1 brush with it and without it. You should notice the difference.

May I rename this Lava on LSD? lol I tried my dangdest to do what Marcello suggested - think the outlining helped, but when I added detail to the rocks it just made the picture busier than it already is so I took it off. There's just way too much going on here, anyway. I tried.

Oh, and thanks, Marcello. At least I learned something. The anti-alias brush is helpful and I had no clue what it was so I never touched it.
davincipoppalag (edited Mar 3, 2004)
I like that smoothy brush too... I made lunch.. and then i Edit..
marcello (Mar 3, 2004)
you can rename it to anything you want, just hit 'edit'
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Mar 3, 2004)
What's for lunch, davin?
davincipoppalag (Mar 3, 2004)
Dunno.. I edit..
