J is For..
lycene
(Aug 6, 2005)
Jark, of course. For Yellow Day at Deviantart.com (the 7th, for those not in the know). Because of when I think of Jark, I think of yellow, and when I think of yellow I think of lemon. I don't know Jark, probably won't know Jark, but I support his ideas of community against the corporation. Go, Jark.Spent about half an hour looking online for a satisfactory picture of a lemon, then went up and raided the fridge and found one in about 15 seconds. It would be appreciated if you could comment on the image as opposed to the message, thanks.
plasma_ooganator (Aug 6, 2005)
Why is he mad? He is cool. His name shall be sour.
squee (Aug 6, 2005)
Omg. This is a nightmare. Nice lemon but I have a grudge against this Jark dude, for starting this whole thing.

Oi. Ok. Here it is, and then I'll shut up.I don't generally like drawing anime. I find it far overdone and I think that people would be better off finding their own styles and developing them instead of just working in what's already done. Secondly, it is so sooo sooooo easy to fall into cliches (see drowning/lying down in pain and angst as above), and it is very difficult to do what has not been done before. However, that said: I can and do admire some anime. There are some people who are so talented with the "formal" sort (I'm not sure what it really is called), who can get such depth and beauty detail into their art. Kudos to them. Anyway, I'm going away tomorrow for three+ weeks and I wanted to do something before I left. This was quick and fairly easy (hate, hate hair), and I actually rather enjoyed it. Here is my (so far) list of cliches in this: 1. Pose (she's floating/drowning/lying down: note the hair, which brings me to) 2. Hair (spread out and curly behind her head like she has a stylist around everytime she falls down to help arrange it all) 3. Expression (closed eyes + open mouth = angst! angst! Or she's asleep. Something.) 4. The Necklace (why do so many anime characters have cross necklaces? Are they all devout Christians? Or is it just a trend?) I plan on doing screentones later. Oh, and ignore the inking. I can't ink (among other things) to save my life. Now with screentones!
Oh, and if this isn't Intermediate, please move it down to Beginner. Please know that I am aware that there are different forms of anime, and that it is a huge collective term. But in general, I find that because it is so popular (and it is so for a reason--there are some very good examples of anime), people tend to just accept it instead of working on developing something of their own. It just seems to turn into a catchall sometimes. Hence, this.

Hideyourface: I will say something simple. In order to draw good cartoons, you must first learn the basics, and these basics include being able to draw the human form properlly.
hideyourface (edited Jun 25, 2005)
learning the proportions, and the basic body structure is needed, but I mean perfecting that, knowing the complete skeleton, and being able to draw all the facial features (being able to draw an actual real human in detail)And again, all these people drawing other anime.. Since theres so many, do you really think they all actually want to be artists? It's mostly for fun.. And you're not likely going to be concerned about developing your own style when you're a beginner. for me, I tried/am trying to perfect masashi kishimoto's style, and then explore other styles. When I start displaying my stuff I'll try to distinguish myself from other artists. I mean give the people a break.. most of the people drawing anime are beginners (and it's very easy to tell)
oikitsumaru (Aug 4, 2005)
sorry, I have no desire to join in the discussion about anime. XD Since its rather beside the point. But I would like to say that I really love the textures in your oekaki here. >_< I'm a nerd for texture since I don't know how to do them. |

You have such a nice soft style. :) It reminds me of Redpanda's art, and that is definetly a good thing. :D
lycene (Jul 27, 2005)
Really? I love Redpanda's style, it's so pretty.
nekodesu (Jul 27, 2005)

Anybody have any ideas for the body? I'm having trouble.Reference can be found at: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/20616957 Done for now, because I can't modify it anymore and I really want to keep the comments you all gave me. I'll delete it later if I ever am able to finish the other version.
Renuar (Jul 16, 2005)
hey Iycene, you've done a great job so far. if it helps, i have some advise; Right nostril needs enlarging (keep the lips in proportion to the nose). Right cheek needs decreasing, and last but not least...amplify the eyes, make them bigger koz they real sweet to look at.
p3ndragon (Jul 16, 2005)
Don't use the burn tool. Please. But amazing picture. Colors are great. I can't wait until it's done!
Gigandas (Jul 16, 2005)
Here's some more things to look into:The face is too wide from left to right (pull it inwards), left end of nose (from our view) needs to be pulled over to the left more so that it's partially past the tear ductof the eye, lower the upper right side of her lip (pull left corner up as well), pull chin in, use more darks on the makeup around the eyes, pull the entire mouth over to the bottom left side of the face, widen "her" left nostril. And most importantly, enlarge the eyes a bit and then shift "her" left eye below her right eye (right now it's backwards, and it's throwing off the angle of her face). Hope that helps some...

Personally, I've always imagined love to be yellow.
emmamommalag (Jul 14, 2005)
To me, it's always been red. But this is really pretty. :)
Punky (Jul 14, 2005)
This is pretty, i love it. Reminds of the swirly hill thing in Nightmare Before Christmas, but this is much better. :DYellow is such a happy color.
starmarked (Jul 14, 2005)
I have recently discovered that yellow is a nice color. I used to be anti-yellow because my bedroom was painted that color, and I grew to dislike it. Now after having the room off-white for several years, yellow is pretty to me again :] Your drawing reminds me of a close up shot of a shell, very interesting :]
Zack (Jul 14, 2005)
Yellow is a very nice color with this orangeish tint to it. The coloring here reminds me of redpanda's stuff. |

Was bored, so this is what the idea generator recommended: "A cute robot".Also known as the Trashcan of the Future. Entirely by accident, I swear. I don't generally find trashcans cute.

I've been drawing/painting quite a few wrinkly old ladies lately. This one seems quite smug about something.Had fun with this one, it's a different style than I normally use. Sorry if this isn't Intermediate, feel free to move it down.
nekodesu (Jun 11, 2005)
This reminds of Zep's drawings...maybe it's the nose...anyways, it looks really nice =D
Farore (Jun 11, 2005)
Wow, you can draw old people... I'l impressed :)P.S. "Babushka"? Czy to mia?o by? po polsku?
lycene (Jun 11, 2005)
Nope, sorry Farore (I assume you were asking if I speak Polish?) I just like old ladies in headscarves. And, yeah, I love Zep's stuff. He's awesome!
Cordelia_Pink (Jun 24, 2005)
"Babushka"... isn't that a Russian word for "Grandmother" (and "scarf")? This looks great. |

Whee, I really like your art. :D So soft and pretty, especially her lips.
Cordelia_Pink (Jun 22, 2005)
That's great! The colors are very moody, just the way the shading is not all that smooth; almost like it's a painting. |
