*lmao* I actually have a pond in my backyard and it's pretty bad, but there is one goldfish in there. It's huge and it has been there for many, many years!

You had mentioned an example about it taking more brain power to design a new car... and there were a few other comments too that I don't have the time to look up right now...
I can draw an original pic anytime... that is no big deal to me... it was realism that I wanted to nab... For me personally, that is way more challenging and satisfying.

You won't find a quote where I said photo copying was easy because I didn't say it.

Perfect. Thank you method3. I think that's an excellent closing statement for this debate.
marcello (Oct 10, 2005)
love the link.
Caddris (Oct 11, 2005)
I'm sorry. That was a generalized statement; not directed all at you.
Isn't that how all this got started in the first place?
ambermac (Oct 20, 2005)
nice rant. i agree. copying is a fine exercise as long as you credit the original photo. using your own voice is always a greater risk--which is why it's much more fun on all sides. in the fine art world, artists who do this sort of thing always add an indicator in the title. they'll say, "after ____insert artist's name". what gets me are those "pros" in galleries who blatantly lift another artist's style and call it their own.

Please excuse anything that detracts from this image, because it was drawn without a reference, and because of that it has nothing to do with my effort or practice but is wholly dependent on talent, which is beyond my control.

p.s.: satire! :0

I'm sorry Zack, i ment the people in general on both of the subjects... I'm not very good with expressing my self... I dont usually talk unless i have to.. so i dont even know why i'm commenting on the subjects in the first place.. I was not trying to be rude, i hope i didn't come across that way. Sorry again about that!

Wow, umber really is an evocative colour!
TaCO (Dec 16, 2005)
The nose is kinda odd.

So you used refs for all your other pics????

I mark all the pics I used refs for.

It's just much more fun to draw without refs.
I use to do these really detailed pics with a ref that took for ever to do.
but when people asked me to draw something out of my head it sucked.

Before i started drawing out of my head I didn't draw much at all. It just wasn't fun using refs all the time.

It was a big step backwards when I decided to stop drawing with refs and to start drawing out of my head.
But i have never been happier, and it made my art grow in more ways than I could imagen.
Zack (Dec 16, 2005)
I never use refs without saying so. The description for this picture was for satire.

In some ways moving house like this would be a lot easier.

In no way would air lifting a house be easir. Concidering the houses' foundation and the way the house is built it take months just to dig up the foundation and to un-hook all the under ground utilities, septa, water ect. Also in the air the houses lack of aerodymatics would cuase it to be destroyed in the same way it would as if it was in a hurricain and it would probally prevent the aircraft from having any control and bring it down as well. But, that just my opinion.
Cool picture thought.

Gigge (Oct 10, 2005)
Might be what trailers are for, but it looks much cooler this way. :) Nice pic, Mal. The cushy cloud-like blimp and smoke coming out of the chimney add to the cozy 'no place like home' feel.

My mouse kept freaking out... And I got to finish it, 'cause my teachers didn't give us homework today!~
I improvised this one to make it fit on a smaller picture than the reference was on.
All I can say is: I tried. No, really, that's all I CAN say about this one. I guess it turned out pretty good for my first realism attempt, though.
Remind me to never try realism again. Ugh...

NOTE: This is from the movie scene in Final Fantasy X where Yuna's doing a "sending" or whatever. It's so sad, but so pretty. I remember watching this video on the computer months before we got it in America, and watching it over and over, because I loved it so much. The title of the movie in the game was "The Dance", hence, the name.
