WerefoxLeBlanc (Mar 7, 2003)
Ok, so I'll spill the beans on how to do these.

1) Make a grid. I just replicate boxes for this, use shift to make them square... though they dont' have to be. For some reson, the animation doesn't show the grid i made properly. If there's a grid lock, someone tell me where it is and save my fingers.
2) Make really thick lines to lay down a path for your knot. This is where experience and familiarity with knots helps. Turn down the line width by two points, or four or even six if you want weightier lines, and trace over what you just laid down again, as I did in red. Or white, or blue or whatever. Pick a lighter color than the first one whatever you choose.
3) Go over the whole thing again, this time with the line tool at 1 px (2 if you reduced the inner line by 4 points, 3 if you reduced it by 6, etc...) and fill in the cross over points. Easiest way to do this is to follow one path and alternate between over and under. That is your mantra when you're making these things: Over, under. Over, under. If you get two unders/overs in a row, you screwed up somehow.
4) You're done. You can add cosmetic touches like I did to make it not look so flat, but that's not necessary. Erase the grid and they'll never know better.

Adding corners using curves involves laying two elipses, one with lighter line width, and copying the relevant portion of the curve. I wish there was an arc tool.

This method IS NOT how you do it with paper and pencil. It's similar, but a different process.

This knot has three lines, but there are rules to follow when doing these things to get huge panels with only one line. I know these rules. I'm keeping those.

Doing these takes a perfectionist mentality to make them look nice. If you're cursor placement is off by one pixel, hit the undo. Hell, I see two places i screwed up (both corners) and they irk the hell out of me. Still, this is the practice board.

I told you these things are a lot less impressive when you know how to do them...

Who said it was impressive? ;-)
There is a pseudo arc tool, and that would be bezier, though I dunno if it's any easier than how you're doing it. One suggestion I'd make is to come up with patterns that use only a single loop for the whole image, rather than 3 like you did in this one. Those escher-esque things are really neat.
Also put the grid on a separate layer, so you can delete it when you're done.

His art doesn't fascniate me. His mind does.
WerefoxLeBlanc (edited Mar 8, 2003)
Marcello, This isn't escher. Escher used tileing images, did "Impossible" architecture, and a lot of really kickass representational drawing. This is celtic knotwork. Check out the Book of Kells if you're interiested.

As for my mind, it's more twisted up than these knots.

Got kicked out of my drawing course at NSCAD. Guess talent isn't everything.

Yay. Bites to be me. You'd tell me if I sucked, wouldn't you>

The smoke from that cigarette pencil is coming out of the wrong place.
I can see why hes crying. I mean, if I had a pencil sticking into my head I would be crying too.
WerefoxLeBlanc (edited Mar 7, 2003)
Thank you for making light of me during a very emotional day. Screw off.
forgotten-memory (edited Mar 8, 2003)
I rather like your animalmen....they remind me of Anubis.
I'm sorry you got kicked out of that drawing course, but I want to know why. hehehe...I must know....
WerefoxLeBlanc (edited Mar 8, 2003)
You're refering to the Furry genre. It's got a fairly large follwing.

I got kicked out of the course through my own damn stupidity, and don't feel like discussing it.

I hated it anyway. Made me feel like I was in kindergarden cause my work is pretty damn sketchy and everyone elses was slick. Even if I had a good hand/eye.

Drawing from real life isn't about the pencil, you know, it's about the eye.

Oh, and sorry for snapping, UppityCracker. I think your work is awesome.

2draw v2.0
marcello (edited Mar 5, 2003)
I'm not going to promise that 2draw v2.0 will be ready any time soon, but I've actually had some time to dabble with it. So here's an important question: Would you rather have all the v2.0 features at once with one big suspenseful release? Or would you like every little update to be added to the main site once it's completed, pretty much diffusing the whole new version thing? (Although there are some major features that can't be done this way.)

There's more to be done than just a knot, but this is as far as I go for now.

If you were shown the meaning of life, would you understand it? Or would it's all encompasing enlightenment be far to grand a perspective to comprehend?

Perhaps the meaning of life is in fact bold and plain to see as the rising sun, and even as we view it, it's meaning escapes us for our lack of perspective.

Our goal should then not be to discover the meaning of life, but to understand that which we have seen...

I found the smudge tool. Whee!
forgotten-memory (edited Mar 1, 2003)
I think the hokey pokey is what it's all about.

having that said, I really like the finished piece...those people rule, although the beginning rocked my socks, too...
heh, the meaning of life....if we knew that, we'd all have to be shot.

"Find the knives... bastards, hiding them from me. They think I'm too dangerous to be around knives... ha, I'll show them. They don't know what dangerous is... but they'll know a whole lot about it when I'm through with them... yes..."

Well, I dont' have any knives... but I have some nice, yummy, sedatives.

Nice pic. I love the facial expression, and envy your line controll. Could use some depth an shading tho. Nice bg.
Kazukie (edited Feb 27, 2003)
Yah the shading/highlighting isn't the best (Is a bitch about that stuff) but I like it. The background's neat. =]
Knockoff (edited Feb 28, 2003)
This is cool. I like the background.

Pretty. All your drawings have such neat facial expressions (when they have faces ^^;) and such awesome action/sense of motion. *gives a cookie*

Marrow fencing. Well, practicing it at least... you wouldn't fence without proper protection. Probably SCA fencing, since Olympic style fencing doesn't allow for main gauche and his Epee has quillions on it.

Probably gonna edit this sometime. Lines look better than I usually do.

EDIT: Cleaned it up a bit.

Music seems to be a prevalent element in my art. Hm.

Well, you cought Marrow dancing. He likes to put on his headphones and dance like a fool when he's alone, but he's too shy and insecure to do so in front of anyone else. He goes to clubs with friends but never goes out onto the floor.

I like the BG. Lyrics by Garbage, "I'm only happy when it rains"

Well, what's the point of feedback if you don't get anything from it? Personally, Even ONE precise comment ("Like your coloring" or whatever) is infinitly more satisfying than 1000 "Tha's nice" comments. I know it's nice. I wanna know why.

As for my style... How much more vague can you get? Might as well say "I like the cut of your jib."
UppityCracker (edited Feb 27, 2003)
Ok, you want a critique? Here we go..
The character design is weak, it is sloppy and unpolished. If you really want to define the character do a few detail sketches of body parts, such as the face. Your "style" needs to be defined more.. I mean is your character floating in space or standing? Space is very important in placing the whole scene.
What IS good about it though is that you have a form and an idea, and I'm sure in your mind it is alot clearer.
Just keep practicing man, practice makes perfect. Don't let the shit that I say get to you. Take it as constructive criticism
I don't mean to judge it too much, and art is art, if you mean it to be a sketch then forget what I say. Keep practicing on human form, like how a person stands and the movement of legs and arms. I know my stuff isnt perfect and need to work on it alot more.. ok, i'll stop now.
WerefoxLeBlanc (edited Feb 27, 2003)
Dont' let it get to me? Lessons already learned. That which does not kill me, et all.

If I DIDNT want a crit, I wouldn't post. Thanks.
darkk_angel (edited Mar 28, 2003)
Good idea, but the lineart is a tad bit messy.... if you cleaned it up a tad bit and added more shadows and color to the picture, and a better background it would be awesome.
