Ahh sorry! Forgot to add the description!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Autumn_Festival
This is a depiction of the Mid-Autumn Festival/Moon Festival/Mooncake Festival/Lantern Festival that is practiced by many East Asians. People celebrate it to worship the moon and show reverence to dieties like Chang'e (whom I've drawn). Farmers also celebrate the end of the summer haversting season with this occasion.

I based the picture off of a few lines in the version 4 of the stories of the Mid-Autumn Festival, found on wikipedia:
"Although Houyi wanted to shoot her in order to prevent her from floating further, he could not bear to aim the arrow at her. Chang'e kept on floating until she landed on the moon. While she became lonely on the moon without her husband, she did have company. A jade rabbit, who manufactured elixirs, also lived on the moon."

And I also based it off of the wikipedia images depicting the characters of Chang'e and the Jade Rabbit.

Contest Week 62: EASTER!?
Shanghai (edited Oct 13, 2007)
Contest Week 62: EASTER!? closed for judging~ Last year alone Halloween got no less than 4 contests and the other holidays are jealous. October is here again but your goal these next couple of weeks is to draw any holiday in the world EXCEPT Halloween. It could be one from any country no matter how obscure the holiday is, and it doesn't even have to be a national holiday, but if you do draw Halloween just remember- Santa knows where you live. The rules this time are: -It must be ...

Delete old entries?
cianteed2 (Sep 18, 2007)
As much as we all like to look back on our old work and see how we've improved, I'd really like to be able to delete some old old old entries that were just crappy work taking up space. So yes, I'd love to be able to trim my gallery a little, is there any way one can delete old entries, or is it not even an option at all?

Contest Week 61: Fall
Sweetcell (edited Sep 30, 2007)
Contest Week 61: Fall *Two week contest. Summer is fleeting and unfortunately the season's waning down. Leaves are falling, the air's getting crisper and colder, and the birds have gone south. Can only mean one thing..... damn winter's coming. But thank God we have the in between season to get ready and enjoy the last few warm days left. So in the next two weeks draw that most colorful of seasons, be it a landscape, a still life, or how you view the fall. And hope winter takes a real l...

'A fair display, my dear gal.'

Can you guess what this picture represents? No one's wrong, though, 'cause art is such a target for individual interpretation. after all.

Update: Now that I'm done, I guess I'll tell you (though it is rather obvious). It is the paradise brought through salvation!

Sleepy time!

Thank you, Kloxy. You're a sweetheart. :)
Shanghai (Sep 15, 2007)
Congratulations Hokori, "Zenker's Degeneration" is awarded first place for Contest Week 60: Paradise.
I think what I like most about this is that it doesn't even need a description or a title. The picture can stand alone and tell the viewer the same story or a similar story through the symbols. There's a self contained narrative here that shows us a past, present, and future.

Aesthetically it's very interesting. There's everything from pure black to pure white to various intense colors, but you avoided overpowering us by being very selective about how much of each of these colors to use and by balancing the composition with some amounts of similar colors in other places. For example, the bright red of the neck is balanced by the same red in the devil's face. The surreal perspective works well for the story-telling aspect as well.
Hokori (edited Sep 15, 2007)
Yay! :)

So... uh... how does this prize thing work, anyway?

I really don't like this kind of art, but I'm fooling around on a Mac and they're extremely hard to control in Las sketch...Can't really zoom in and there is no scroll wheel that works for this... Bah, oh well. I might work on this at home with my XP... Anyway, base color laid out...just gotta clean up the lines some, them blend some darker colors in just a teensy bit.

I haven't noticed any difference between mac or windows xp for using lascaux sketch, and I use both. I don't use a mouse though, but there are some mice for macs with right button/scroll wheel. If you want to zoom in with lascaux there's a slider bar below the image. Moving it right will zoom in and it's at 100% when the bar/triangle thing is even with that notch near the left end of it. Here's an example.

Try turning off the anti-alias when you draw these lines. That way when you fill in the space between the lines it'll be clean from the start and you won't get all those white spots by the lines.
Darkheartgypsy (Sep 12, 2007)
Thanks for the tip.
What I was talking about the zoom thing, is that, I can zoom in, but it messes the image up pretty badly. You have to zoom in on a specific point or it damages the image...:P

This is for the contest, let me describe..

The ultimate paradise, is my ultimate dream, a world where cancer can be beaten. My father had cancer and it's so frustrating there's nothing you can do. A lot of people die because of this disease, it's a nightmare and the only paradise for me is a world where hospitals can beat cancer!

(The yellow ambulance is a dutch one, becaus i'm dutch! =D)

lol @ Axil

I'm sorry about your father, Sanne. You actually live in that world.....bazillions of people fight cancer and beat it every day. (several of my immediate family members have done so) It's not always a death sentence, sometimes it's all about attitude. You gotta want to live badly enough to... well, to LIVE, though. There are, however, inoperable, untreatable cases, and if your father's happened to be one of those, you have my deepest sympathy and my prayers.

I'm with Dan in that I'd rather die from pretty much anything than having to be saved by an ambulance that looks like a 1969-1973 reject refrigerator with wheels that came from a junkyard and was spray painted by homeless people who got hold of some really bad weed.

Remember to keep your chin up and keep your sense of humor. Nobody gets out of here alive, either way. :)

edit: I didn't intend for any of that to sound mean, I was actually trying to "impart some hope". I don't know your exact situation, and I do know personally how painful it is. Life would not be nearly so precious or joyful if it didn't come with the pain and the cost of living it. I think sometimes cancer brings itself upon us as a gift so that we have time to say "goodbye"... that's necessary for some people. Don't be afraid. (Your ambulance is cute... that along with Dan's "brashness" made me laugh and I needed that. :)
R.ockabella (Sep 14, 2007)
They send ambulances to cancer victims because of complications, everyone knows.
Shanghai (Sep 15, 2007)
I actually like the idea of this one. It's a serious subject, but it's drawn in a comical way. There's something almost ethereal about the idea of a physical thing like a vehicle smashing not into cancer but into the concept of cancer.
Axil62 (Sep 16, 2007)
No, it's pretty stupid.
