actually, i shun layering like the devil. the only time i use it is in a picture with lineart... and that would be 2 layers... or in a picture with lots of lighting effects. i think this came out pretty good, but you could have cleaned up the outline a little more. i like the 'messy' smudge effects on the skin, and the indefinite light source. people say you need an obvious light source, but they are wrong!! :D

Ooh, very nify. Lurve his hair, for some reason. Random note: the swords seem too thin to withstand any opposite force. Just something to think about. Unless, they're round. ~_~

The "hilt" of both swords is a ring for the finger to go through. I'm not sure exactly how that would come into use during swordplay, but the sword's cool anyway.

Said swords are actually a (highly) modified version of a weapon used in Feudal Japan by the police force, called a Jitte. Think of what he drew, except with round, solid steel bars without a blade. It's purpose was to either a) knock your opponent over the head with it and leave them reeling, or b) catch your opponent's sword between the large prong and the small one, leaving you free to a) break the sword, b) disarm your opponent, or c) do something I saw in a crazy Chop Sockey flick a while back that I really can't describe... 0_o

Also, if the blades on Roy's version were constructed the same way as a katana, they would be some pretty damn strong toys.
