'A fair display, my dear gal.'

Can you guess what this picture represents? No one's wrong, though, 'cause art is such a target for individual interpretation. after all.

Update: Now that I'm done, I guess I'll tell you (though it is rather obvious). It is the paradise brought through salvation!

Sleepy time!

It's an interesting drawing but I'm trying to figure out the paradise part?
Hokori (edited Sep 15, 2007)
I put the paradise part in the description, but I guess I'll tell you with a bit more /description/. XD

This paradise is the one a saved Christian after death experiences. The head dismembering at the neck symbolizes that once you're head, the soul leaves the body--no need for the shell, anymore. The dark area at the bottom where her body is is the earth, plagued by darkness and evil things, which is one of the things you must overcome if you are to go to heaven. The golden man is obviously Jesus/God, while your hands touch his face in affection.

The strings connecting to the heart show that once you are saved, you have God in your heart, therefore both 'hearts' are in unison. The green sprout on the hand with the root people attached is your memories of life on earth... And the devil guy is--who else?--the devil. I'm sure he's ticked off at the thought of salvation...

The rose emerging from the neck is for the family left behind, reminding them that--while you are dead--your soul has moved on to the ultimate paradise.

There. :)

If I was judging this contest, this entry would win (pending there were no additional entries). Regardless of what you believe in, you have to appreciate the symbolism and the intricate composition going on in this piece. I love how your style has developed Hokori, it's becoming cleaner and more distinct with each piece you do.

Thank you, Kloxy. You're a sweetheart. :)

Congratulations Hokori, "Zenker's Degeneration" is awarded first place for Contest Week 60: Paradise.
I think what I like most about this is that it doesn't even need a description or a title. The picture can stand alone and tell the viewer the same story or a similar story through the symbols. There's a self contained narrative here that shows us a past, present, and future.

Aesthetically it's very interesting. There's everything from pure black to pure white to various intense colors, but you avoided overpowering us by being very selective about how much of each of these colors to use and by balancing the composition with some amounts of similar colors in other places. For example, the bright red of the neck is balanced by the same red in the devil's face. The surreal perspective works well for the story-telling aspect as well.

Yay! :)

So... uh... how does this prize thing work, anyway?
