did you go to art school? or are you self taught? your pieces are majorly eye catching
Silvair (Nov 24, 2007)
SCORE! Applet said error, and I thought it didn't send, but here it is :D! Joyous day!
@ lori: Nope, haven't gone to an art school. I'm kind-of self taught I guess...? I did take an art class in the eigth grade though ^^.
lori (edited Nov 24, 2007)
wtf?!?
well everyone here taught me, that's it and that's all
ok wait, my dad did too
and Walt Disney :)
Miss_DJ (Nov 24, 2007)
wow...incredible so far!!
Sketcher_V (Nov 24, 2007)
silvair, you work aaaamaze me, gwahhh, you could really make a manga book! your style is sooo refeshing and colorful, i really do think your the best anime artist on this website
Silvair (Nov 24, 2007)
@ lori: Ahh in that sense, I too have been taught by the amazing oekakists on each oekaki site. They make me strive to improve more :D.
@ Miss DJ, I think I'm pretty much done though :).
@ Sketcher V: Lol, I'm really not THAT good! Takes much more skill than I possess to make a manga book-thing. Thanks for the comment - I'm glad you like the style/colours :D!
Dr.Moony (Nov 24, 2007)
seems like her arm is a bit short...otherwise I like it a lot!
...so much interesting going on

Definitely gorgeous.
Sweetcell (Nov 25, 2007)
Congratulations Silvair, Drown is awarded first place for Contest Week 65: Specialty Tools

You managed to make great use of all the tools available and create a very lovely piece. Taking full advantage of the Textual tools. It's also well composed, colored, and very pleasing to the eye. A very good example of what an artist can do with an appelet.
davincipoppalag (Nov 25, 2007)
Congrats on the win beautiful work
Miss_DJ (Nov 25, 2007)
Congrats!! This is a wonderful draw!
PolythenePam (Nov 25, 2007)
I think people need to open their minds.
enjoydotcom (Nov 25, 2007)
Congratulations :D
Thought it'd win.
Open minds to what Pam?
Sweetcell (Nov 25, 2007)
I'm curious too.
staci (edited Nov 25, 2007)
mmm..i love silvairs work, i love this piece but i disagree with the placing. to me this is a very pretty picture with some textures thrown in. i think you could take the textures away and it would still be amazing. i like miss dj's pieces..they definately show off what tools can accomplish, she doesn't create a random mess and call it abstract.
it seems like the judging of these contests (lately) is swayed by popularity and number of comments. kinda blows.

not trying to take anything away from this piece.
PolythenePam (edited Nov 26, 2007)
I agree with staci. Silvair has a lot of talent at drawing this kind of thing, there's no denying that. But it does seem like the crowd-pleaser always comes out on top and I don't think that's necessarily right. That's all.

edit: congratulations on the new wardrobe :P
Silvair (Nov 26, 2007)
Oh wow xD... thanks everyone for the comments <3!

I was wondering about how the contest would be judged after I finished this image, and wondered how it would be judged, what with all the variables that could come into play. Was especially wondering how it could be judged what with there being two different applets with different "specialties". It seems to be more a Lascaux vs. Shi contest.
From appearances, it would seem as though the one done in Shi-painter, at first glance, may have more special effects because there are so many different textures, when in actuality, only one tool was used. All the techniques I used, in fact, were just primary concepts: point, click, drag, drop (so on and so forth).

Lascaux, on the otherhand, deals alot more with the actual manipulation of the image, which I think, is more exemplary of proper utilization of speciality tools.

Also, it's hard to gauge how well one uses these specialty tools, since there are things in Las that Shi lacks and vice versa. It's like an uneven battlefield since this contest is so dependent on the applet. There's like.. 12 layers, sharpen, smudge, custom brushes in Las, but no textures like in Shi.

Personally, I think Miss DJ should have won, as she used Lascaux's specialty tools in unique, interesting and thoughtful ways, whereas mine was just click-drag-drop for the sake of "here's a tool why don't I use it". I genuinely didn't do much different than I usually do ^^;.. and I didn't learn anything/try anything that I didn't already know.

Or it might just be that fascination with how someone else could conjure something so cool with the applet one is unfamiliar with? And because one is unfamiliar with that applet, it seems that much more amazing? Ehhgh I dunno what I'm talking about anymore. >>;
enjoydotcom (Nov 26, 2007)
Silvair, Lascaux has textures too. Only just recently found out. You just have to twiddle with it more.
lori (Nov 26, 2007)
you say the funniest stuff sometimes Joyce lol
Wraith (Nov 26, 2007)
Wow! Lascaux has textures?

Awesome Piece Silvair! Congrats on the win.
lori (Nov 26, 2007)
ch'ya Wraith... try some of the stuff on the left side of the applet and mess with the opacity and flow too
