on the corner of my Mammy's ranch house porch

from a photo I took
I may do more than one of these, I took several pictures of empty chairs there. I like empty chairs.

I didn't notice it when I took this photograph, but there's a reflection in the window of a lone chair that's sitting out in the yard, which I also took a photo of. I think I'll paint that chair next.

wow, that's so relaxing to look at.. I've always wanted to sit back on someone's front porch, have a beer and a cig and just rock in a rocking chair on a warm afternoon... so far, the closest I've come was a cigarette out front in a rocker at the Cracker Barrel restaurant :)
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Apr 12, 2007)
thanks... I'm always so reluctant to post anything unfinished here, because it takes me forever to get it right, and it's really not pleasant unless I do... but this is more of a "feeling thing" for me than a "get it right thing". I love empty chairs, but I really like these chairs the best when my Daddy and Uncle and brothers are sitting in them and standing around them and telling stories... I miss my "Pa"... he used to be there, too, but he isn't anymore. What I thought of when I took the photo of the empty chairs. You are more than welcome to come down here any time, there's a chair for you, too. :)
lori (Apr 12, 2007)
aww that sounds so niice... you must have a thing for empty chairs like I have a thing for doors and windows.. (and I like to see your unfinished work, it's already got a finished look but I know you like to go the whole nine yards.
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Apr 12, 2007)
I'm finding it's harder and harder for me to want to paint here... It's like I "max out" at something and then I become bored with it... I do that with everything. I go looking for the next thing. I love some of the people here, and I love to paint, so I'm "holding on". :) I don't care if this one goes the whole nine yards, I like looking at the photograph, and this is a good excuse to do that.
davincipoppalag (Apr 12, 2007)
I'm not even gonna bitch about sharp ..that's how much I like this one, for the feeling it evokes....
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Apr 12, 2007)
hah... It'll be a little sharper... when, and if, I ever finish it, you bitchy old man. :) Thanks, Dave. I'm still not gonna call you "Poppa", ever :D.
sincity (Apr 12, 2007)
I'm really liking this picture. The colors are great. very warm and cozy feeling in this one. :}
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Apr 12, 2007)
You're such a sweetheart to say that... thanks, Mike. :)
davincipoppalag (Apr 13, 2007)
Thanks for "no poppa".. and I'm not bitchy.. I'm curmudgeonly!

It was really warm and humid here just a little while ago, but I was outside just now, some gusts of cold air came through, the sky got really dark, and someone just called to tell me there's a tornado on the ground just a couple of miles from our house, and it's headed this way. WHEEEEE. :D
lori (edited Apr 13, 2007)
then why are you sittin' at the computer??! run Dorothy run!
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Apr 13, 2007)
haha... I'm not...(I can't run... I have a broken foot and ankle, remember?) I'm going (hobble, hop..hobble) back and forth. I just went back outside... it's hailing really heavily.. weird hail...some of it's little bitty and some is kinda big and it's blowing in all different directions. brb :D

Oh, and if I could run... where would I run to? lol
lori (Apr 13, 2007)
oh yes, that's right, the ankle..... I have lots on my mind :/
I don't know where you'd run to.. the basement? in circles? I'd be all freaked out.
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Apr 13, 2007)
I guess it got lost, it didn't find my house. We have tons of them this time of year. We don't have a basement. I live on almost solid rock (there's like 6 inches of dirt is all)... it's part of the bluff that goes around the lake. A few people around here have storm cellars, I don't... I wouldn't get in it, anyway. With my luck, something'd probably fall on top of the door and I'd be trapped in there forever. :D

I love the purple hues in this, the chairs are incredible and so is the scenery. Great Job! And by the way..I am sure everyone gets burned out on things sooner or later but you are so good at art that even if you do get burned out maybe just give it a little break and I am sure you will be better than ever when you get back to it. You are an incredible artist!

I said my Pa isn't there anymore, but he really is, in a way. I think that's why I like the empty chairs, sometimes. He always wore a really pretty silver and turquoise bolo tie with his suit to church, he always led singing, when we got back to the house he'd take his hat off, stand on the porch and jingle his change in his pocket while he told stories and laughed at his own jokes.

thank you, Dymples. :)

I can tell I'd like your Pa. I think these chairs need cute butts planted in them and some hands holding on to glasses of cool beverages...and more story telling and lots more laughin. I love this picture. It pulls me outside. It's beckoning, in a strong, not so subtle way.
lori (Apr 16, 2007)
just beautiful, and so comfy looking
davincipoppalag (Apr 16, 2007)
The light you put in this is my favorite part of the picture
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Apr 16, 2007)
Thanks... it's actually like this in the photograph. After submitting I looked at it and I think I overdid it... I would have taken a bit of it out except that I had already merged the layers.
davincipoppalag (Apr 17, 2007)
Well.. I like it how you did it..
hideyourface (Apr 17, 2007)
mm take the interest off the undetailed picture with light rays. Interesting approach.
PS (Apr 17, 2007)
Nice sunrays, I like this.
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Apr 17, 2007)
hideyourface: It was not an "approach" to withdraw attention from the lack of detail in the painting. I did not put an inordinate amount of detail into the picture as I fully intended to add the light rays before finishing. As I said, it appears like that in the photo, and is simply my interpretation of what the camera saw.
Axil62 (Apr 17, 2007)
I think it worked well.
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Apr 17, 2007)
I'm glad you think so, thank you. It isn't the best photograph in the world, nor the best painting, but I LIKE IT ANYWAY. :D
Axil62 (Apr 17, 2007)
If you were to do anything else to it, I would make a new layer on top, fill it with a light grey and then decrease the opacity of the grey until it were a very light haze over the whole thing and then on the lightest of light areas of the painting I would fade the grey haze that is left with the eraser tool set on a very low opacity setting just because the photo has that slight grey haze look over it.
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Apr 17, 2007)
That sounds like a wonderful idea, but I "weren't gonna" do anything else. I KNOW!!! Why don't I shine the sun right in our eyes and just cover the whole thing up with a huge yellow glare and we can all squint and stumble around and look for our sunglasses and stuff.
Miss_DJ (edited Apr 19, 2007)
I know, why don't I just like it the way it is.

edit: if this doesn't read the way I meant it to sound it is supposed to sound like this, "I know! Why don't I just like it the way it is?!!" like, by jove....that's the best idea I've heard all day. (i.e. instead of bitching about oh this oh o that...it's just plain freakin fine and good that way it be.
Sweetcell (Apr 17, 2007)
I wanna whisper "Taste the rainbow" skiddles

It's perfect the way it is, seriously some people can't be satisfied and have to find fault in everything. You dun gud sweeting.
fleeting_memory (Apr 17, 2007)
the title makes me think of the song "empty chairs at empty tables' from Les Mis. *sniff* anyway awesome picture here!
hideyourface (Apr 19, 2007)
the background in the original pic isn't blurry like yours, its just lighter :p
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Apr 19, 2007)
Yes, thank you for that my dear Conor. (I used the blur tool on it, I'm happy to know it worked) It's so nice to have a loyal "following" by someone such as yourself. lol :)
Cameo (Apr 19, 2007)
You have another loyal 'following' DBA! I make sure I check your gallery nearly every day! I agree wholeheartedly with (most) everyone on here. This is a lovely painting just the way it is.
enjoydotcom (Apr 28, 2007)
I like it, and what is the fun in drawing something exactly like the photo? That is why we have camera's and there is art... :-D
JK-Arts (May 5, 2007)
Thats looks Very awsome. Cin
TalkToThisHandx (May 26, 2007)
I like the flash of light.
RJ (Jul 6, 2008)
I love what you did with the light. The picture looks very spiritual.
