Rembrandt's selfportrait. Using a reference. Just an experiment.

I can never get it exactly like the master himself, but I'm pretty damn proud about it!

It might be a bit overambitious, but it is also sooo much fun to do!

Nothing but respect for the old masters who worked with traditional media!
Still at least 2 hrs of work left on it.

THis is beatiful work , Joyce! It really looks painted!
enjoydotcom (May 19, 2007)
Thanks Dave, this is the one where I thought the halftones would come in useful, but it is too organized for what I'm trying to achieve.
I need(ed) random specks. Meh, this will work eventually too I guess.

Badass so far please finish!
enjoydotcom (May 19, 2007)

You're outdoing yourself here Joyce. Just wonderful so far.

OO you seem to have the colour pallet pat down..great work so far, I'll be back to see the finished job! :D
enjoydotcom (May 19, 2007)
Thanks, in earlier revisions he seemed a bit jaundice, but the original has a lot of yellow in it. I kinda like these tones, but it isn't exactly like the original.

Big men are fun to draw! Literally much more body and interesting angles.

OMG! This is incredible! I went to "first ever oekaki" and it is almost as incredible as mine is, only you are such a great artist! I am still striving to get there. I love this picture. big men are fun, and not only just to draw. Sorry about the punn but had to add it. lol I love this, it is beautiful work! You should be very proud to be able to accomplish this.

Oh, by the way that drawing program or your first ever oekaki site looks very interesting. I can only speak and read english and I did sign up there and I was looking around to see where the Oekaki thingy is to draw and have been there an hour and still can't make head nor tails of anything, but enjoying the art there. Do I have to download something first before I draw there? Just curious and if you could help it would be appreciated, but if not, I belong to so many places already it does not matter a whole lot. Thanks!

Thanks Kute, the program they use are pretty standard, they have shi painter 1.08, shi painter 1.08 pro, shi painter 1.06, shi painter 1.06 pro, and Paint BBS. It is a fun site, mostly kids though. Can imagine that finding your way around on a foreign language site is hard. If you want to draw you go to the home page (quickest way when you're lost is to click on the Senile logo. On the bottom of that page it says : "Maak een nieuwe tekening" > this means "make a new drawing". As soon as you have drawn there, you can store 5 pictures, After drawing you have 2 choices, post now or save for a later time, once posted means posted.
Personally I prefer this 2draw. have to say that before I'm kicked off, lol

I made my first oekaki at Senile, too :)
About the drawing: Nice lighting/ colors. It has a nice atmosphere. The hand is a little strange, though.
enjoydotcom (May 22, 2007)
I know, I really had my face up against the screen to see the original, if you ask me he had a glove on. Or maybe (more logical cause) I need glasses. :V.
I feel ooooold over @ Senile. They even call me granny... :@ (my own fault tho)
KuteDymples (May 22, 2007)
I guess you are prob right about me finding my way around, I can't even see anything close to "Maak een nieuwe tekening" I don't know why I am being so weird about wanting to draw there so bad. But I first tried with IE then I thought I should try mozilla cause it works best with most of the draw sites I go to. Still can't find it. Haven't given up yet, but I'll keep you posted. It just sounds fun, and I am sure they will call me granny too or great granny, I'll be 50 in sept. Ha Ha! Just young at heart though. (wish it was young at body) I feel my age today for sure. Thanks for the help. I checked out the ref pic too, this is fab. I can't imagine getting to this point. I will someday, maybe when I am 70.
Sweetcell (May 22, 2007)
It came out beautiful, I just love the lush tones used here. Bravo Joyce.

That site has some reall good pics, too bad I can't read what they're saying. Ah well,
I got's me 2draw. :)

Ok, I finally found it, made a quick little drawing to see if i could and saved it. Whew that took all day. Thanks!

LMAO...
KuteDymples (May 28, 2007)
I agree with you about some of the comments over to Senile, but I guess the thing that draws me over there is that shi painter 1.8 I love that program. I wish we had it here or over to Ginkgo. Maybe by the time I get really good at it they will update it here, or over to my other fav. place. I go over to Senile about once a day to check things out, but as far as posting a bunch I won't be doing that. I can see they are a lot younger, and don't put a lot of effort into thier drawings or comments. I have seen some pretty drawings, but like you said We can spend 2-3 hours on something and someone that puts no effort into their stuff will give a negatively sounding comment. Ooooo KKkkkk! LOL It was just sort of a challenge for me to figure it out, since I almost have it, it is losing it's appeal.
Miss_DJ (May 30, 2007)
oh my goodness. This is exquisite. Wonderful work!
enjoydotcom (May 31, 2007)
Thanks Miss DJ, glad you can appreciate it.
And Kute, If you ever need a human translation, I'll be happy to help.
