Safety save. And AH HAH - had epiphany about layers; I get it!! :P~

Safety... Er, this thing is going to have 5 million layers in it. Wonder how many layers I can have without breaking something??

Yeay! Wasn't sure where this was headed, but I like where it ended up :).
Miss_DJ (Jan 20, 2007)
oh my gosh...this looks cool! like a Spirograph!
Cameo (Jan 20, 2007)
Heeyyy! How'd you do that? I really like it!
Naima (edited Jan 21, 2007)
Thanks, guys! And too funny, Miss DJ - Spirograph is exactly what I was thinking as I laid out the line pattern XD

About how I did it, Cameo - bleh, it was more of a pain than I thought it would be *laugh*. Let's see if I can summarize briefly:

1) Drew 1 pixel line from top left corner (0,0) to just right of middle bottom line (0,160). Drew another line, starting 20 pixels lower down and ending 20 pixels further right. Kept going until I got back to the starting point. (So that's v.1)

2) Not sure enough about the accuracy of gradient tool for the fill, but didn't want to fill in each freaking diamond individually... So I made a layer, traced lines for one of the large triangles (with inner large diamond as one edge) and used fill tool to fill that in. Made sure to set the opacity low so I'd get darker shades with the overlapping areas. Then erased outside lines of the triangle. Made separate layer for each large triangle to keep things straight... (And you can see from v.3 and v.4 that the shape isn't quite a simple triangle as you go around the corners of the center diamond... But you get the idea.) Kept it up until everything was colored in.

3) Merged most of the stoopid layers and softened the black lines (just erased on low opacity).

4) Then my favorite part: monkied around with the colors (overlaying shades, burning/dodging, etc.) until I got something I liked (v.11).

5) Last, I set the soft round brush to a large size so that one click got me one big dot, and added that dot to the middle. The middle was nearly black red, I used a low opacity yellow color on the dot, so I got that nice red-orange-yellow effect near the soft outer edges, which ended up making it look a bit 3-D ish.

Presto! :) But cripes, can't believe it took so long. Still have to work on my tool efficiency...

you do some great patterns, I know they're not easy either
Kloxboy (Jan 21, 2007)
Wow! That's really cool. I like seeing the process too. Well done.
Naima (Jan 21, 2007)
Muchas Gracias! :-D

I think the only way we'll ever know is if you did these in Oekaki so we could see the animation, so get thee to Oekaki so we may sample your style m'dear. Did I ever say I liked these or was I just offering you a car because I was mezmerized? I like in any case. :)

Just read one of your comments. 64 layers? Oh my God. `@__@'
Naima (Jan 21, 2007)
Oh, is that where the animation comes from? Had no idea! Ok, I'll have to give Oekaki a try next time! Glad you like them :) :). And I'll keep hoping for that car... tee hee XD.

And yeah - ridiculous number of layers :P~. If I figure out how to finesse the tools more, maybe I won't have to resort to such obnoxious brute force methods *laugh*
