The Oekaki shi you can download, is that for your own personal use on your computer? That is is it like the free art programs you can download to paint, or is only to help you make your own oekaki site? I'd really like to know this.

There's the one you can download that's a stand alone shi-painter. Which isn't all the great since you can't change the canvas size (that I know about). Then there's the one you can download that makes the oekaki board for your website (Oekaki-Potato).

Oh thank you CK for replying, I kept coming to this post for a responce. I don't mind the canvas size, I'd just like to know if it has layers, and if possible you can grab an exsisting piece and color it? Thanks again CK.

I'm pretty sure it has layers, but I don't think you can easily import an image. Of course if you were a programmer, that would help.

I recommend using open canvas, it's like using Shi-Painter but in some ways it's better. For instance the pen and water color tools are really smooth, even more so with tablet.
I believe you can also import images as well.

Open Canvas, like totally!

So open canvas is a free personal art program like oekaki (or similiar?) Or it's a share the same canvas program. I just want to make sure before I download anything.

It's both actually. Though the canvas sharing has always had problems for me, I'm not sure for others.

It's not free though. It's 6000~8000 Yen depending on which version you buy:

Those versions yes, but the link up on the third reply is free.

crimson: as far as I know that's no different from pirating... I haven't found any official reference to any version of opencanvas being freeware.

Open Canvas 1.1 was freeware. The link Crimson gave was to a version that is still deemed free.

Will someone tell me which oekaki is the one for personal use. There's so many versions.

Clearly you're confused. Oekaki is for websites, not personal use.

openCanvas 2.x, 3.x, 4.x are shareware for sure. I'm still having trouble finding real confirmation that openCanvas 1.x was freeware. I find it odd that it the file only seems to float around less than legitimate sites. But I guess do whatever you like. I doubt anyone will stop you for using it.
