edit: omg I totally didnt catch the pictures on the top of the merri-go-round! So cool :)
And wow, why are you people getting so nasty? No offense, but if you've seen the show and know the nature of this contest, you would make the connection (several of the other characters are displayed in the panels). It has the distinct colors, hair, and eyes. Ganging up is not cool.
You need to leave it to clox to decide whether something qualifies or not. If you're concerned, ask him privately in a memo.
is this similar to the album cover? no doubt. very.
were the substitutions made in a creative way that incorporated themes from the cartoon and the characters into this? yes. i personally laughed when i saw this and thought how clever it was to take something that fit so well anyway and to put little pieces of the cartoon into it.
as it pertans to the rules of the contest? while the contest asks to make characters in the style of a painter, not put a character into a painting...the rules don't state whether or not this is outside the boundries. it would be impossible for anyone to make rules broad enough that they would lead to learning and creativity in contests if they expressly said exactly what could or could not be done covering every possible case.
it seems that what we have here are rules of the contest that are appropriately ambiguous to make this fun, challenging and creative. also, we have an artist who misread the rules once, and WITHOUT ANY COMPLAINT said, ok, no problem ill give it another shot. in my opinion, both of the entries are among the best quality and creativity entered. it seems to me that the contest board was meant for friendly and fun learning and competition. just like this site. why does everything have to be taken so seriously that all parties end up feeling bad? the rules were made well as per the objectives of these contests and the artist, not once but TWICE, put in a LOT of well spent effort making wonderful and fun and creative pieces.
if you dont think this piece measures up to the requirements, that's fine. you've made that clear. but in the end it's not your decision. so why take the fun and learning out of this by making it a bigger deal than it needs to be?
that's beside the point the really. i was just pointing out that this whole big stink is being made when really...the whole purpose of the contest is to have good natured competition and fun, creative learning and inspiration. no one here is trying to be a menace to that, so why are you being so argumentative and petty?
i really have no stake in this as im not even entered into the contest. but for crying out loud. this shouldnt be such an emotional thing.
All that aside, the picture is very well-done, it's actually much better than the reference used. I'll just go stand in the corner, now.
edit: wait a minute... I stand corrected. I do think I understand... I thought that Mark Ryden had painted those girls "as" the Powerpuff girls... if what she did was just look at his depiction of his girl characters, paint them and say that's her interpretation of the Powerpuff girls in his style, then I'm not confused anymore.
Please do forgive me. I can be really stupid sometimes.
Congrats Sweetcell...you have put a lot of work into this, and it paid off!
Sweetcell DID NOT get a 2nd chance at this contest due to klox's good graces, ANYONE can submit multiple drawings for contests, that has been expressed from the beginning of the contests. He advised her well before the end of the contest why her first drawing didn't qualify and she was able to submit another before the end date. If you have an issue with him telling her that her submission didn't qualify, on a drawing community site, thats pretty nit-picky. If she had been given extra time due to the fact she hadn't read the rules, I could understand, but as it is, I don't understand the problem.
great job sweetcell, looks incredible
