Contest Week 38: Master Study - 2 week contest
<<***Showcase Announcement below!***>>

Your goal these next 2 weeks is to reproduce a painting by one of history's master painters. I suggest you pick your painter from an art history book or art history website. If you're not sure if the painter you picked falls under "master painter", please memo me and I'll determine if he or she is acceptable (keeping in mind, I'm not looking to debate over the matter). All the movements are acceptable, such as realism, cubism, impressionism, minimalism, etc. Wikipedia should be helpful in regards to finding movements if you're inclined to find a painter that way, I've included a link below. Have fun and do copy other artists work. ;)

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA:

- You'll be judged on how accurately you reproduce the painting. The style, the composition and overall size should be given a lot of attention.
- Please include the name of the artist who painted the original and a link to a picture of the original painting (your reference).

Wikipedia painting history: The History of Painting

Contest Week 38 will be open for entries from Sunday, November 26th to Saturday, December 9th, 11:59 PM PST.

CLICK HERE FOR WEEK 37 WINNERS

JUDGING CRITERIA:
Creativity: The amount of imagination, originality and expressiveness that was put into the entry.
Technique & Effort: The amount of style, skill and craft that was put into the entry.
Following the Theme: How well the entry followed the theme of the contest.

Please memo Kloxboy or TheCrimsonKing if you have any questions, need space or comments about the Contest Board. You may also leave your questions and comments on this thread but we prefer you memo us if your query requires lengthy discussion.

For more information about the 2Draw Contest Board and a record of past contest winners, please look at the 2Draw Contest Board Welcome Page

2nd. Rembrandt by frootcake
3rd. -After Dali- by Alter.Native

***SHOWCASE ANNOUNCEMENT!***

Marcello and I have decided that once the 40th contest is completed, 4 contest winners will be selected for the Showcase Gallery from the past 40 winning entries.

And in the future: Unofficially, after every 10 contests, one contest winner from the 10 winning entries will be put in the Showcase Gallery.

Because I needed to. :) Any further discussion on the subject should be said through the memo system, not on this thread. Thanks.

2 loooong weeks? That's too sad!
  icon
Kloxboy (Nov 26, 2006)
~~PuFFeR~~: Why is that sad? Just curious.

~~PuFFeR~~ (edited Nov 26, 2006)
2 weeks to draw one picture for anybody is a long time. I will probably finish by Wednesday, and then have to wait a whole week and a half to see the results!

nobody (Nov 26, 2006)
it is sad. so much time, so little contest.
  icon
Kloxboy (Nov 26, 2006)
~~PuFFeR~~: There are 2 reasons this contest is 2 weeks long; one, the difficulty level of this contest constitutes an additional week, two, I'm going to be in LA for the first week of December, so I won't be able to post a new contest. Sorry this all makes you so sad but I doubt it's "too sad!", you'll live. Give it a shot, you might learn something.

~~PuFFeR~~ (edited Nov 26, 2006)
It's fine, I already know what I am going to do. As far as going back to revise your picture, how many times can you do that? I guess I don't get the whole maximum size allotment.
  icon
Kloxboy (Nov 26, 2006)
~~PuFFeR~~: You can revise your drawing as many times as you need to. I mean, within reason, needing to revise over 50 times is probably a bit much. ;) If you need space, just memo me or a moderator with a link to your drawing.

Sounds cool I mite give It a Shot.

Can we put ower own spin on it or should we just go for a photocopy.
  icon
Kloxboy (Nov 26, 2006)
DerrickEwing: No, do not put your own spin on this. I imagine hints of your style will come through whether you tried to or not. What I want you to take away from this contest is an understanding of the process involved in making a master work, even if it's on a very small and digital scale. Try to understand the style of you painter and what he/she is trying to communicate to the viewer visually and psychologically.

I think this is the best concept for the contest board yet, because trying to emulate any of the masters is one of the most educational (if not the most educational artistic exercise there is). I have learned more by attempting to do this than I ever did from any art class or teacher. I have done it many times on canvas, and here, and I think I only posted one or two of them, because although I learned something, I am not a master, and I disappointed myself. Monet's haystacks frustrate the !@#$!#$! hell out of me. I thought they would be something I could achieve, as they say "paint what you know"... I have seen "haystacks"... stacks, round bails, square bails, in everything from first light to no light to full moonlight... didn't help. :) Doesn't stop me from trying it, the lessons learned are worth the struggle.

I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of this one.

Kloxboy (Nov 26, 2006)
DeadlyBlondeArcher: Exactly and I'm glad you're going to enter. :)

I am? Oh... ok... I guess. I ... am. :)
(I'll try... I spend a lot of time trying... I promise to try.)

Shanghai (edited Nov 26, 2006)
This one time I made a painted copy of a famous artist's painting and the people in my art class liked my painting better that the picture of the original one in the book. His name was somethingsomething, I'd have to look it up.

Just to make it insanely difficult I'm going either do rain, steam, and speed or ulysses deriding polyphemus, both by Joseph Mallord William Turner, one of the most awesome English artists to ever stick paint on a canvas. I did a speech on him in college once. Also the Tate Museum in London has a whole -permanent- section on him and I've been to it. =O

oh I just remembered it was Edward Hopper, and it was a painting of a house.

Redpanda: Very nice. Can't wait to see it. :)

DBA: "do or do not, there is no try" ;)
  icon
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Nov 26, 2006)
haHAH...so that's where I've been going wrong.... I spend 23.5 hours out of a 24 hour day "trying" to do something right. Never happens. :)

I think I may well have a go- and try and do better than my last competition entry- which was rushed and not as good as I would have liked...... These competitions seem like great fun!

DeadlyBlondeArcher (Dec 10, 2006)
In my opinion, this theme pulled out more nice pieces of art than any contest theme yet. I really enjoyed watching the progress of it, and I think the choices for winners were right on the money.(Congratulations to those of you that won) I started a couple of studies and didn't feel like rushing through them to make entries for this..(I'll finish them eventually). but I was thankful for the idea and inspiration to do something different, and it's wonderful artistic exercise to do these types of studies.
