Yeah, it looks chalky to me! ^^ You could enhance this look next time using a textured pencil... there are some textures in Shi Painter that resemble chalk a lot :D
I think this piece doesn't need a bg... without a bg, it looks more 'dark' and even 'claustrophobical' :)
