I'm no scientist, but the higher up you go, the air pressure increases. The added pressure caused the balloon to pop. That's why airplane cabins are pressurized.
It's the other way around, the higher you go the pressure decreases. This causes the balloon to expand (the air inside the balloon needs to expand to match the lower pressure around it), eventually this expands too much for the balloon to hold, and bursts. That's just a guess anyway.
