I'm trying something very unorthodox here: I'm painting highlights before shadows. It might be doomed for failure, but I felt like trying it.

Not so unorthadox if you're using watercolors :) Great pic.

Thanks for the comments. I think it did come out a bit like watercolors in some places with the background color showing through in areas. My limited background with traditional paints is mainly with gouache, oils, and acrylics, and I've always followed the rule of painting highlights last (and very opaquely). It felt a bit odd to do them as a first step after the underpainting (I'm not sure that doing an underpainting is that worthwhile in digital, but I didn't want to muck up this portrait too much since I'm doing it for somebody). The result was kind of interesting though. However, my shadows are definitely weak in this drawing. There is much greater contrast in the source reference than in this picture, but I got a bit timid of going too dark after establishing the highlights (became more like line art with some coloring), but I ended up becoming too attached to the existing result to become very bold with the contrast.

That's excellent. I really like the style and the polish, well done. Looking through the versions was a pleasure, I love process. :)

this is very nice, is the gal on the left the same one from your piece "123"?
comd (Mar 25, 2006)
Thanks all. :) JoeNobody: no, she's someone else, but you know what they say about Asians! [JK - I'm part Asian myself] On the right is my sister and on the left is her friend in this picture.
