Have you tried working with the pen tool? I find that it helps a lot with making smooth line-art.

Yes Darkcloak is right the pen tool is very very usefull for making smooth lines.

Woah' i know you dont care much about the lines but i think this picture looks pretty good any way but would look better with smoother lines.
