Stumbled across her while doing a search for reference pictures of birds, and figured this would be more fun to do. (Yay, portraiture.) She was the first female Australian aviator.

First Advanced posting, hope it's OK.

Edit: Made it sepia in Photoshop: Link, Take 2

I'm actually proud of this one, yay.

This is looking wonderful thus far. You have quite a lot of talent for being only 15 years old.

fleeting_memory (Aug 2, 2005)
haha that was trippy I was just looking at this picture-went away and commented on another and came back to comment on this and she had another revision done on her. Anywho, very nice, you took on quite a challenge-good luck with it and I'll see you on the other side ^^

Kasha (Aug 3, 2005)
wow, this is great. I really like how you captured the smile. :)
lycene (Aug 3, 2005)
Thanks, all! I can't really take a lot of the credit for this, as the reference picture was really beautiful, and far too much fun to paint. The mouth took forever to get right, though.
kejoco (Aug 3, 2005)
I think the eyes in yours have more emotion than the reference...great job

I have a few things to say about. Frst off this is awsome work and that your only 15? I envy your skills. also if she was alive around the time you drew this picture it be sitting centered in her living room of her house. Great picture and keep up the great work.

The only mistakes i can see is lack of detial in the clothes and that you may have added some wieght to her face, you also may be afraid to goto to dark.(note id be too)... That aside i can't talk, and from an artist stand-point i draw toons and animate but i think i know what i see.
either way awsome job and you keep this up you'll be one of the best as you grow.
hideyourface (Aug 4, 2005)
there are a lot of little mistakes when you compare it to the ref, like the angle the head is pointing, but still, getting it the exact same is extremely hard. This is really good.
lycene (Aug 4, 2005)
Thanks so much, JK! I had problems getting the relative darkness and shadows correct, as I work from print-outs, and my printer is almost out of black and white ink. The whole pic ended up several shades lighter, with horizontal lines running through the whole thing (eew)! I didn't want to go into too much detail in the clothing, as I wanted to really focus on the face. (That, and I got lazy). I probably should have made the shadows much purer than they actually are.
Hideyourface, I can't really see the angle difference, but that's probably just me being biased and blind because I drew it. Oh, well, too late to fix it now.
Gigge (Aug 5, 2005)
I like this alot. I think it conveys that sense of free-spirit and adventure that she must have had to compel her to fly.
Renuar (Aug 5, 2005)
Much talent. Good draw. I look forward to seeing more.
