Oooooow. The compression is absolutley horrible.
Here's a link to a non-crappy compressed version; http://blueskywolf.com/2005/ThalatOe.jpg

Yeah, I play this game too :/

TRIP: both 2draw's copy and the one you linked look exactly the same, are you using AOL or some stupid net accelerator that compresses images?

edit: actually, the 2draw copy looks even better on closer inspection, yours is a lot blurrier in the background and hands and missing whole areas of color.
And if you don't believe me, look at the three versions in comparison:
http://zoraw.cellosoft.com/data/4/44914/44914-v1.jpg (jpg version 2draw displays)
http://zoraw.cellosoft.com/data/4/44914/44914-v1.png (original uncompressed PNG that was submitted by the applet (if that's wrong, then blame shi-painter)
http://blueskywolf.com/2005/ThalatOe.jpg (your version)

(hah, I tend to get defensive about compression on 2draw since I spent quite some time tweaking it to work perfectly.)

OMFG -squeals- Ragnarok Online! I haven't played that in forever.

What Marcello said. I'm not sure what you use as a browser, but I've seen how AOL can butcher a picture.Get Firefox or kick your computer in the face.
Childlike_Vampire (May 8, 2005)
lol, I <3 you Marcello.
Great drawing, I especially like the shading on the opposing parts of collar. And the hair is damn spiffy.

I have noticed that PaintBBS compresses pictures in a way that there is some obvious loss of colour detail when the picture is uploaded.
Shi-Painter does that too, even more obviously than PaintBBS.
The fault belongs to the applet because the jpg version is almost identical to the png.
The solution is to either screencapture or watch the animation, the animation is sometimes buggy though.

This is a fantastic drawing! The colouring is soft and smooth. The shading is very realistic and gives depth and dimension to the character. Also I love the colour scheme alot, nice muted (are they called like this?) colours.
Excellent artwork! >:)

I see an obvious change in the compression :/ and I run firefox. The dark browns in the hands group horribly. Some may not see it if their contrast/brightness is way high or low on their monitors but I noticed it instantly and see it both in the PNG and the jpg on the images on 2Draw in this particular entry; there are dark browns in the hands that turn blocky in both of those. I do not see it in the image I took, I capped that directly from the painting and saved it as a maximum quality jpeg in Photoshop CS.

I'll try running this on another browser but I highly doubt I will see anything different. Normally it wouldnt bother me but for this instance in the way the brown was compressed it kind of distorted the paint strokes.

And thanks for the comments, everyone. <3

Well if the problem is in the PNG image, then it sounds like it's Shi-painter at fault. As Xodiak mentioned, it has a corrupt PNG encoder which disturbs some colors (Lascaux does not have this). I am curious what a screencapped PNG version looks like (to compare side-by-side with the submitted PNG) and if it's worth looking into hacking/fixing shi-painter somehow.

edit: Beaten.

I really don't think the choice of browser will have any effect, since the pre-submission compression occurring here is most likely internal to the applet and thus is not browser-specific. If you want to prevent future compression nasties in pictures that use soft gradients like this, Lascaux would be the better choice of applet. (Its pictures are still compressed before being displayed on 2draw, but it stores uncompressed versions like the one Marcello linked to.)

Good work on the drawing. Cool costume design and muted (yep) colors. I really like those crazy anime-style high collars, but man, he's got a long neck. Also, there isn't enough contrast between the gloves and background. Using the same color hue is fine, but the foreshortening is really weakened (flattened) by the matching light/darks. Seems like it would work better if you picked just one of having either same hue or same light/dark level between the gloves and background.

as much as I like Lascaux, it doesnt have the same paint quality as Shi-painter. It's a picky process thing, thats all ;| but thanks for the explanations. I thought I was going looney when I was the only one that seemed to notice.

And I agree with the background. I should have but was about to pass out and wanted to sleep :/ I'll keep that in mind next time, I see it now >.>

TRIP, you're awesome dude.
Except I've had problems with saving JPEG in Photoshop CS. Even at max quality, they turn out looking horrible.
Meh. Either way, great draw. Maybe the BG could've been a darker shade of greyish stuff? I dunno. Looks great anyway.
sincity (May 14, 2005)
I thought I commented on this. OOPS Sorry. I like this, The only thing I don't quite agree with is the hands. know they are close to the screen and all, and so out of focus, but still they seem like they blend to much and they should be more distinguished. If I used the right word. Over all I like the piece though. :} I dig your work trip. :}
