the loomis books help. still i must say this looks excellent. keep up the practice, its more than paying off.
I think the reason that is looks flat is because the neutral grey overpowers all the other highlights and shades. if the figure itself were before a black background, as an example, it would look more dynamic. Try to add more darks on the figure, too :)
