One thing that stands out a bit is the lack of eyebrows... the eyes don't feel very feminine. The eye shading is probably the best part of the piece though.
As for the mask tool, basically if you set a mask, you'll never be able to draw on top of that color. A reverse mask means you can *only* draw on top of that color. It essentially is a nice way of pretending your outlines are on a layer above your coloring--in a limited sense.
