you dont always need to submit practice drawings. for improving shading id suggest reading some drawing tutorials or doing a study of real objects. no really, sit down and lay an object on the table in front of you with a decent light source (desk lamps are good) and practice on paper. really study it and see how you improve. as drawings are usually representations of what you see, looking at things right in front of you is a good way to improve. :)
