any ideas on how i can make the water look like water, and i can't get the sun ever to look right, it just looks some giant orb placed in the sky.

You don't actually have to draw the sun, itself, you can put a brighter area off in the corner to suggest that is where the sun is.. the lightener works well with that ( i always forget which is dodge and which is burn so I call them the lightener and darkener)Set the opacity low and put it on the bright yellow and blend around.. for the water start with your base colors and gradually go lighter and lower opacity in smaller and smaller sections towards the top of the waves until you get to almost white and put some spray lines and such. Take a look at emmamommalags Sunrise in Ocean City picture in the showcase.. that's some good water!

Ah..you went a whole different direction. Very nice result. I like the placement of the figure and the colors of the sky.
