As I understand it, Navajo is not really a "written" language, so to speak, but while I was visiting for a few days on one of the reservations, the granddaughter of an elderly Navajo woman who made me a traditional horse blanket (from her own home-spun wool, from her own sheep) wrote down some of my favorite words for me. Ei-nhi' is Lightning in Navajo. In return for the beautiful gift, I gave the granddaughter the pearl necklace I was wearing. It was much prettier against her dark skin than it had been on mine, and it is one of my favorite memories. This is neither one of those people, of course, and I am just chasing rabbits here because I have to write a description on every picture and this is what I was thinking of. :)

It's a great story and an even better picture. You did a great job on the eyes on this one. The other thing I like is that though it's soft, it's still sharp overall... very very nice.

dba: doesn't it go against their religion to write down their language? something about the soul of the word being lost because of that...? in which case, isn't it disrespectful to include it here?
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Apr 5, 2004)
No one ever told me that. If it were really sacrilege I don't think she'd have written it, because they are from one of the most prominent, respected families and very traditional. The woman speaks no English at all but knew what her granddaughter was doing and didn't disapprove. Things are changing with them rapidly, though, so I don't know. If it is true, I should change my title, (seriously) but then I'd have to delete my description and none of this would make any sense.....

And come to think of it, I think I had only seen a couple of Navajo words written before that... but they were well-known words (usually describing a type of people or place)

edit: Oh, and evil cloud, it's a guy. :)

It's neat.. you look at all these pictures and then come to this one and I don't know what it is, but it just has this calming effect to it. I think it's the eyes... or maybe just the overall expression on his face... hmm. All these pictures are way beyond any amount of comparison I could ever dream up, don't get me wrong, just some are more busy than others. This one is extremely peaceful.

Wow! This is terrific! I love the softness of the piece, the realistic skin tones.....It almost leaps of the screen at me in 3D definition. Beautiful work.
