I think there are some good aspects to Christmas, for instance, I enjoy the lights and decoration (some of it at least), and I love seeing my little sister happy, but all in all, I think it's too material oriented of a holiday, and I wouldn't mind skipping it every year if I could get away with it. But, like Lori said, it is what you make of it, there's no laws saying you have to act like everyone else on Christmas, I guess, it just depends on what traditions you practice and how much you can tolerate your family.
I think Lori summed it up nicely, Christmas is what you make it (as is the case with most things in life). As a secular holiday, I think it's great. If you take away the gifts and the religious aspects, there's still plenty there to enjoy.
great, you can have your opinion of it, and i'll have mine; and since you don't know me,you can't really judge what i can or cannot make of it;for a lotta people it only makes them depressed, and that's not my opinion, i've read many shrinks who say the same thing. I much prefer other holidays; it is a RELIGIOUS holiday, and instead, everyone worships santa claus and credit cards. maybe it was nicer once, but its been ruined for a lot of us.
To begin with, Christmas was not a religious holiday. They don't even know exactly when Jesus was born, it's a mixture of religious and non-religious winter holidays. "Your" Santa for instance is based on our Sinterklaas. The tree comes from Germany, and I'm sure many other traditions stem from other places.
Now, I'm technically Roman Catholic, but I have very different views about religion in general. I agree about the fact that it is very commercial and a feeding frenzy. Or so it seems, because if you ask me, they've been saying that since I can remember and in reality, I don't see it getting worse.
We exchange some gifts and for me it's a time to celebrate life in general and to enjoy the company of family. To have light in our houses during those long, dark, cold winter nights.
In other comments, I really like the lady you drew.
enjoydot is correct, it is a mixture of those things; and to different people it means different things.I have no blood family, really, and the "family" i had years ago,was destroyed because one of the main members died.Unfortunately it just reminds me of all the people who are gone and dead. its common to get depressed in later life,I found out, and that's one of the main reasons; everyone dies. yeah, Xmas reminds me of all that.
I always get grumpy around Mother's Day. Now that is getting pushed down your throat as well each year more it seems. "Here, a great reminder that your lovely mother isn't around anymore. And we're going to shove that fact in your face with each commercial you see.".
