This doesn't look like it's quite up to intermediate standards...
Axil62 (Jul 25, 2012)
I'll be the judge of that. OK, lets see here...... uh huh..uh huh... right...OK. Yup, it is.
enjoydotcom (Jul 26, 2012)
It actually looks fine here, that's why I left it. It certainly shows a lot of progress of Moons work. It's got decisive lines and I like the way the hair was done.
Tsukiyo (Jul 26, 2012)
Didn't know just showing slight improvement made for intermediate but whatever.
Axil62 (Jul 26, 2012)
You did good. Don't worry about it.
Tsukiyo (Jul 26, 2012)
Not trying to insult them. I'm just used to higher standards.
Axil62 (Jul 26, 2012)
I've seen your stuff, Tsukiyo. I think your stuff would be quite suitable on the intermediate board. What is it about this drawing that says to you that it's not quite there yet? I'm not being combative, I just want to know what it is you are seeing that isn't up to standards.
Tsukiyo (Jul 26, 2012)
Well, to me it doesn't show a good enough grasp of the tools in the applets. Although chibipaint only ever crashes on me, from looking at the works of others who use it, it seems to show quite a lot of potential in its variance of tools available.
In regards to the elements of art I don't see much variance in line weight which makes the piece seem rather flat despite having some cell shading. The shading itself doesn't display a definitive light source either. Part of her hind leg is highlighted where if we go by the highlight on her head, should actually be in shadow or neutral. The tail and mane are not cell shaded though, which causes a bit of a tension in the style.
Negative space is not put to good use and the composition is unbalanced, though not terribly so (it doesn't make me tilt my head).
Knowing the pony style, I'd say the proportions of this particular piece are a little off and "stretched" vertically. Her now thin, long face is being crowded by her eyes. This vertical stretch sometimes happens from not having your screen resolution set properly though, but this seems a bit extreme to be just that if it is a factor.

Hope that wasn't too wordy or harsh. They are on the right track.

It's clean, it's proportional, it shows a good understanding of the bezier tool and the light is clearly coming from top left to lower right. Just because an app has 100 different tools doesn't mean you have to use them all. As a matter of fact, in my opinion, the fewer "tools' you need, the better you are. This is a cartoon, not portrait. Many cartoons don't use line width variation, that's just personal preference.

Tsyukio, it is a bit nitpicky, about the proportions of the make believe pony. Plus, she hasn't finished yet, so any other things she might still want to work on. It's clean and neat, there are other drawings on intermediate granted a life there that show less knowledge of the tools.

oops, i do that myself, sorry, i just put a not so refined birthday card on intermediate, cause of the size. this is a anime, not realistic, and yes, it may get a lot tighter; it's a good start, for sure. cute. yeah, it is clean, and i'm often not that way when i finish.ha ha.

important to be slick and smooth when finished? cartooning always had to be squeaky-clean, but i don't think fine art is always "finished and smooth" looking at the end. what do you guys think? some fine art styles never get "finished" and as clean as the asphalt in Switzerland, so what are the priorities?I would not say that "the scream" really was slick, or finished looking as a coke-cola illustration. so how does that place artists, famous, great ones, who never were smooth or clean? When does it depend on the real style of the artist and the work? probably the amt. of "finished, clean," looks are being set by the owner of the site, and most of the artists here. I think Marcello has his own subjective opinions about what is really good, or not. --or what he likes. frankly, being very clean and "finished" is not so important to me, anymore, personally on my own stuff. but how can you determine the proportions of a fantasy pony?that's like asking barbie dolls to look exactly like real women, not fantasies. this is very cute.

I wasn't saying it was disproportional in comparison to a real pony and I thought that was obvious. I was relating it to the style of MLP's current incarnation.
I also don't judge on line smoothness alone, I look at other elements like the overall composition.
There will always be a difference between pieces that lack skill and knowledge and those of just a different, possibly unrealistically proportioned style.

I think it's cute.

Just wanted to put my two cents in there, I love the first verison of this. The lines are awesome and I'm jealous as lines are my enemy right now. The work might seem simple, but abstract art can be simply a lot of boxes and colors inside them without any real definitive "artistic" value to some eyes.

Keep drawing MoonShardDragon, you're doing well :)
enjoydotcom (Aug 11, 2012)
Moonshard is probably thinking: what the hay?! All this commotion over a pony. :D
