I like the face, but perhaps it will look nicer if you would use less (or no) textures, they in general look so rigid.

the ref pic shows texture and a rigid structure, I usually do not use the texture tool, look at the finished material, but thank you for the advice, and thank you enirroc and davinci

Even if it has texutres in the ref, if you look at it closely you'll see it's not made of perfect squares/lines etc. Thus if you tried painting the textures, as you see them on the ref, by yourself it would look much better. :)

oh, and another thing, for some reason the textures, blend, sharp, blur etc always felt like some sort of a cheat to me.. I use the flow and opacity, and hardly ever use the move tool.. and that's about it.
Hehe.. just noticed you're on chibipaint not Lascausx. well, chibi has much more cheats!

ok shults, it now does not match the ref, but who cares? at least the texture tool and that done by hand are gone, after all you don't want someone cheating on this site
toonlink101 (Apr 25, 2010)
OMG its so so realistic & beatuiful!!!XD
lynnandcharlie (Apr 25, 2010)
thanks toonlink101
shults (edited Apr 25, 2010)
you totaly missed my point.
I was trying to help you get it to look better, but you obviously aren't intersted in any criticism.

Interestingly enough, I was right. It is better this way.
And are you accusing me of your lack of ability to make it look like the ref by saying"it now does not match the ref"? -That's just lame.

Cheating part refers to me btw, as to why I'm not comfortable with this tools..
lynnandcharlie (Apr 25, 2010)
what is btw? and I was trying to make it look transparent with a woven look and I certainly want suggestions and I can't get lascausx to work. it keeps doing weird things
enirroc (Apr 25, 2010)
I think softening up the outer edges and such would help too.
firecracker (Apr 25, 2010)
She is looking really good......who is she supposed to be? She looks like "royalty"......could she be a queen or a princess?? Very nice draw.....:)

I must say, I like it much more like this (as I thought I would). The face before didn't match the veil, and vice versa. Now it meshes better ;).
Flubbles (Apr 26, 2010)
90% of the time textures look crappy, I think the fun is in trying to replicate the textures by hand. I dont like how the vail looks now either, if you show me the ref I'll give you my opinion what you should do, I'm not saying my opinion is right I'm just offering my help.

Flub, the veil on the ref looks like parchment paper for baking to me. I also think this is much better without the textures.
Try and refine the black line on her head if you can.. Are you using a tablet now?
Bobstained (Apr 26, 2010)
It looks better than it did, but so would a dog turd if I sprinkled smarties on top of it. I'm half kidding, it does look better than it did.
shults (Apr 26, 2010)
If you sprinkled amarties on turd someone might mistake it for chocolate balls.
lynnandcharlie (edited Apr 26, 2010)
it would have taken a ton of amarties to cover all the chocolate balls my dog left around the house when I was in the hospital, my husband said he was on his hands and knees scrubbing floors and carpet and then had to scub the dog and no, most of the time I use a mouse but I will try the tablet again

You should add more shadows to give your drawings more depth.

Like I was saying on the version that Flubbles did of this painting, I think it would be a really difficult and confusing one to try to copy. It's beautiful but it has some inaccuracies. You've done a good job with the nose and the fabric is looking great. I think the shape of the mouth you did is better than the original! Flubbles has a good point about shading. Another thing I would suggest is that you try playing with adding some more colours to your skin tones. In general skin has a pinkish hue, but if you look closely at it you will find yellows, oranges, purples and greens in most skin tones. Darker skin has purples, deep reds and lovely mauves, as well.

And, if we're going to consider using some of the tools in drawing applets 'cheating', then I guess using colour is 'cheating', too. I mean, we didn't grind and mix our own pigments, did we? And you better not ever use undo or erase, that's obviously cheating. I mean, come on! It's a new medium, use it to its fullest and stop imposing these purist notions on yourself. I use every tool in all the applets at some point and no one has ever accused me of cheating. And they'd better not! The point is to use them in such a way that when someone looks at your artwork they don't see the obvious use of the tools. That 'cheating' mindset is the same one that, ten years ago said digital art is NOT art. Phooey.
lynnandcharlie (Apr 28, 2010)
Thanks teapot. I appreciate your help and will work on it
Roytje (Apr 28, 2010)
I don't think using the texture tool is cheating, but I haven't seen someone who used it well. It always look kind of fake somehow.
lynnandcharlie (Apr 28, 2010)
you are right, but I was starting an overlay of lines and was going to continue the rest by hand and I reacted to the wording

For heaven's sake, you guys take the word cheat too seriously. All I meant is that it feels unnatural for me. For me, one of the most natural features is the water tool, and it clearly blends colors. But I can't use other things without feel it's too artificial and forced on the canvas.
lynnandcharlie (Apr 28, 2010)
both of us reacted to words making communication difficult, if you are willing to teach, I am willing to listen
