I think it just takes practice. One thing I would do for sure though is to make the background first and then put the puppy on the next layer. Also, possibly just do a couple just for fun. Slab a bunch of color, thickly on the canvas and then just use the smudge and blend brushes and push the paint around to see what effects you can get. For example, you could make the trees and branches first then just blob on some different shades of greens here and there on the branches and then smudge them around to form leafy shapes. Make any sense???? I think this pup is pretty cute BTW.
I rarely use the airbrush, usually just the watercolor brush with lots of flow and little opacity. Vibrant colours. You might try watching a little of my hawk, I just keep adding colour until it is what I want, if I don't like it I just add more colour. The hawk took me much longer than it should have cause I couldnt get the feathers the way I wanted. It has two layers, just the background and the hawk on the second llayer. There might be some tutorials around for it. Don't hesitate to ask Q's, I love to TRY and help, not sure if it does any good tho, esp. here, you all are such seasoned artists.
