How to Paint like Shi painter
kupocoffee (May 8, 2010)
Hey Everybody, I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I need help with Adobe Photoshop and Corel painter 11. Im trying to figure out how to achieve smooth painting like the shi painter application. I'm in love with the Shi Painter Watercolor tool but it seems that I can not achieve this smooth paint in photoshop. Any Suggestions? Thank you. PS: I hope you can understand the wording of this question, I'm not so good expressing myself in words.

Not entirely sure how to start this. From time to time I see digital art produced here that is very detailed an realistic, I look at how many hours were spent on one piece and I have to wonder why someone would put that much time and effort into a drawing on 2draw. It's just not that important or fruitful. It's pixels on the internet. It's almost meaningless and yet people labor for hours upon end trying very hard to produce something that isn't going to be viewed for more than a few days at mos...

Just a quick sketch. I don't normally use a brush larger than 1 pixel for general drawing because I feel like the color is applied faster and more boldly than I prefer, but I thought I'd try a more bold sketch with only a little erasing.

Thanks. I think I've drawn more in the past several months since around november than I have in all of the several years before this, so I think I might be getting a little better now.

So I was thinking that I might do something like draw one face a day. I have a lot of portraits bookmarked that I just never got around to drawing.

"Oregon officially bans ALL PLASTIC BAGS,SOLD AT ALL RETAIL AND WHOLESALE OUTLETS. STATE CONDEMNED TO CHOP DOWN THOUSANDS OF TREES,TO FULFILL ORDERS FOR PAPER BAGS,MILLIONS OF THEM. All packaging will cost more." Is this the "ecology state"?So,now the lumber co.s.have excuse, to chop down thousands of trees,to make millions of required paper bags? How wonderful of the "environmental" (read:Crazy) governor and legislature,to pay off the lumber industry, which they have bribes from!! Ain;t America wonderful? We've got bribes down, now we just need dictators like everyone else.Well, we have that, almost.Pretty much. :)

oh please... banning plastic bags? and how many years have we been using trash bags? I miss the old stinky dumps... I think they just wanna take all the land for their new GREEN energy plants.... and condos for all the creeps who are moving in everywhere

The druids left us Stonehenge, the Egyptians left us the Sphynx and the pyramids, the Greeks left us the Acropolis...when future archaeologists (assumedly from other planets , since earth will be a landfill by then) our society's legacy to posterity will be plastic water bottles, plastic grocery bags, and disposeable diapers...

I admit, we homo sapiens have a big problem;unlike the other species,we transform material into objects, substance, that cannot degrade back into nature. I think we're the only species that does that, so I suppose the problem with human beings is they are advanced, and intelligent, enough just to make a bunch of junk, but not advanced enough to go any further than that. That makes us a very limited, not-evolving-greater species, and the only way we'll survive,is to evolve past this bad plane. I do not see us doing this,at this point. (science fiction novel starting here, where all the normal humans die out,Ice Ages, ect.,and only small tiny groups of very intelligent, eco-thrifty ones survive. But, I would have trouble even making that credible,in a sci fi story.Chances are,all the huge amt.of litterers, and plastic-makers will kill off all the eco-thrifty ones, and junk the planet anyhow.) So, yes, we do want to stop trashing the planet;when it's unliveable here, there will be no more us. But with this type of unco-operative human population, not gonna happen.)

I've never had coffee, but I've had coffee cake. Is it kind of the same flavor? Apparently caffeine sucks the calcium right out of your bones.

Maybe it is done,it's man kind, savage hate filled, and bombing my city of Portland,Oregon, cause all those little cute sweet Somalian Muslims fifteen years old, hate my country and it's kids, so badly,he tried to blow them all up. Right at Xmas tree lighting,in Portland Oregon. Now I'm thinking,"why did we let these guys immigrate into the US,and Oregon? So their kids could bomb us?Great, way to go."

Crow with a bowl of udon.

This is my 3rd attempt at this scene. This is also my first time doing both dithering and anti-aliasing by hand. I'm still trying to get the hang of pixel art. The time is way off on the first version because sometimes I forget that I'm drawing and instead I go cook something.

The third to the last revision has the full color palette I used, 26 colors on 15 layers. Somehow I managed to hit 6 hours exactly, but then I remembered the shadow for the crow.

Is it any fun?
tanuki (edited Jan 29, 2011)
Kind of, slightly, but not using shi painter. It's pretty hard to stay motivated doing so much for so little result. It'd be a little easier in photoshop because of better layer controls, such as lock transparency. I doubt I'll do any more here after I finish the current one. Lascaux doesn't work in such a way for pixel art to even be possible with it.

This one is for a contest. It's looking about as crowded as I was hoping it'd be.

If you came up with all this on your own you're more creative than I'll ever be.

no, they're all monsters from japanese folklore. Well, the giraffe is a kirin, which is described as a "chinese giraffe" because the origins of that mythical monster were chinese artists that heard descriptions of giraffes and tried drawing them without ever seeing one, but I decided to just draw a giraffe.
