Unfortunately for Harold, the irony was not lost on Gertrude.

This was supposed to be quick.

From Perdito Street Station, by China Mieville, Lin (the red, scarabish one on the right) is an artist commissioned by Mr. Motley (the mobster on the left) to create a statue.
See, this is what happens when I don't use references.

"'Scuze me lady, but my mommy says you're a witch."

This came out more or less as I saw it in my head. Hey, ma, no reference!

Thanks! If you full-view this, the box is the same gray as the background. Hmm... Just remembered, I meant to actually use tones in this... Oh, well.
davincipoppalag (Aug 30, 2005)
Fabulous drawing! Great 3D quality...I love this!

Well. First things first. The writing on the prompt was amazing, as was the idea as a whole--thanks so much, DinoFlorist!
This was the second entry I did; the first one I worked on for four and a half hours, only to have the applet go crazy on me (look at the front leg!), killing everything I had done. Here's the link.
This little guy has eight skinny, double-jointed legs. The first pair have an extra joint, and are usually carried folded over on its back. All of them are tipped with the claws you can see, made of three claws that close into points. When the winds come around, it can stick all of the claws into the ground, and extend them to give it more leverage. These also come in useful when catching rabbits and fish, and to jab at the alligator. The many legs distribute its weight over many small points of ground and so help to avoid the mines. It is camouflaged, and so is invisible from the creature-eating plants. As for the monkeys and their coconuts, well, lucky for them, these thingies taste pretty good. Can't be helped with that big body and skinny legs.
I'm really happy with the expression on the fish.
Edit: Compression killed this. And, eew, there are ugly lines on the left side that I didn't notice before.

omg id run if i saw that thing, it looks like a giant spider! eeeek, great idea with the claws :)
laurael (Aug 29, 2005)
Very creepy looking thing. Wouldn't want 'that' crawling on me. Love the eye.
DinoFlorist (Aug 30, 2005)
This is a very nice composition and work as a whole. The picture is very fluid and complementary. After I looked at the habitat I made them live in, I thought of a spider legged creature too (also to avoid mines)!

This soft oil medium style is fantastic.

Bah. Stupid background. It's supposed to be the color of the board, but it didn't work, as you can see. I also switched painting styles halfway through. Can you tell?

I think his hand reaches upwards indeed. It almost looks like he holds a camera above him and takes a picture of himself. The perspective of the ground makes me think so. This is an awesome drawing, it has the feeling of a painting on canvas but it still is extremely realistic. And the face is so sweet! Excellent artwork. <:)

Actually, I think the photographer did take the picture of herself, so her arm would be reaching upwards and that would account for the perspective. So sorry for not posting the reference, I had put it on originally, but since the pics got seperated during a saving glitch, I forgot about it. Here it is: Linkage!
Ooh, and it's a she, I believe. Otherwise, a very pretty boy.
And, Raiknii, thank you so much for your nice memo. If only everyone here were as thoughtful as you.
Xodiak (Aug 22, 2005)
You really made her great... Especially the shirt and the folds! |:)

The lip position is great, and the realistic texture of the hair is also eye catching.

Jark, of course. For Yellow Day at Deviantart.com (the 7th, for those not in the know). Because of when I think of Jark, I think of yellow, and when I think of yellow I think of lemon. I don't know Jark, probably won't know Jark, but I support his ideas of community against the corporation. Go, Jark.

Spent about half an hour looking online for a satisfactory picture of a lemon, then went up and raided the fridge and found one in about 15 seconds.

It would be appreciated if you could comment on the image as opposed to the message, thanks.

Omg. This is a nightmare. Nice lemon but I have a grudge against this Jark dude, for starting this whole thing.

Stumbled across her while doing a search for reference pictures of birds, and figured this would be more fun to do. (Yay, portraiture.) She was the first female Australian aviator.

First Advanced posting, hope it's OK.

Edit: Made it sepia in Photoshop: Link, Take 2

I'm actually proud of this one, yay.

Thanks so much, JK! I had problems getting the relative darkness and shadows correct, as I work from print-outs, and my printer is almost out of black and white ink. The whole pic ended up several shades lighter, with horizontal lines running through the whole thing (eew)! I didn't want to go into too much detail in the clothing, as I wanted to really focus on the face. (That, and I got lazy). I probably should have made the shadows much purer than they actually are.
Hideyourface, I can't really see the angle difference, but that's probably just me being biased and blind because I drew it. Oh, well, too late to fix it now.
Gigge (Aug 5, 2005)
I like this alot. I think it conveys that sense of free-spirit and adventure that she must have had to compel her to fly.
Renuar (Aug 5, 2005)
Much talent. Good draw. I look forward to seeing more.
