Master Copy #1 - Josh Kirby
mursku
(Feb 16, 2010)
i was thinking that i might learn more from copying some great paintings instead of fotos. For my first one, i chose one of my favorite artists, Josh Kirby, to copy from. He was a really great artist, but its a bit difficult to find a good painting from him to copy, as he tended to do those really detailed paintings (especially on the Discworld books) for reference i chose one of his simpler paintings: http://andokai.blog.cz/0608/josh-kirby

I just felt like trying a "merman" draw.....it's something a little different from the usual "mermaid" draws...."lol"! I still need to work on this more.....I'm still not satisfied with it. I don't know how that "merman" thinks he is going to battle that huge ugly fish with that spear....I think he is gonna end up as "lunch" for that fish....."lolz"....:) I'm posting this as "finished", cuz I don't feel like working on it anymore at this time.....but I do plan on finishing it later.....I just feel like starting on something different to draw....this one took me quite awhile to draw, and I'm not in the mood to do anymore to it right now.....thanks for all of your comments....I will finish this later.....:)
vlad.the.hamster (Feb 27, 2010)

your finished draw is fantastic, I really like how you use light and dark to create a mood
firecracker (Mar 1, 2010)
Thanks "lynn"......for the nice comment.....I'm glad you like the pic.....it's not quite finished though.....I still want to work on it a little more.....but that will have to wait till later....I'm too tired to do any more to it right now....."lol"....:) |

So, everyone seems to be doing a little copying from favored painters & illustrators so I thought I would throw in my 2 cent. This is from Kay Nielsen. I really love all of his work. Especially for the East of the Sun and West of the Moon book. :) Not done yet, and the lady needs some reworking of the torso and head, but better then nothing! Ref: http://www.ralphbakshi.com/blog/archives/sunmoon03.jpg
Teapot (Feb 27, 2010)
I bought all the illustrations from that book in card form about...erm...30 years ago. Still have them. Still love them. This is very, very pretty and has captured the feeling of his work.
Layne (Feb 27, 2010)
I am glad you like it. They republished the east of the sun and west of the moon about two(?) years ago in a really nice hardcover edition. :) I was so glad when i saw because while I had a book of his illustrations I really wanted to be able to read the stories that went along with all of his illustrations.
enjoydotcom (Feb 27, 2010)
Very attractive style, those soothing colors are great. It would be a great contest, draw from your favorite artist. In his or her style.
mursku (Feb 27, 2010)
when i compare your piece with the original, the first thing that pops to my eyes is that the original looks like it was made with watercolors, while yours looks too smooth, there's hardly any texture.. i liked the texture you had going in the fifth version. if you wanted to have texture like in the original painting, an easy (and quick!) way to do it, would be with a scatter brush (choose a high scatter count and you can maybe crank up the spacing too) on a separate layer. that way you can easily erase the eventual wayward dots from unwanted areas, and you can also play around with the blend mode and opacity (make it subtle) ..hmm, another thing that i noticed was that the original was much more sharper (darker and thinner lines).. i suck at line art so i'll not gonna try to give you any advice on that. You would only get worse if i tried to teach you line art :P |

Reminds me of a road near home 'Apple seed lane' it is lined with loads of crab apple trees that flower at the same time, the smell is so scrumptious just like this drawing.

It's so pretty and dewy-looking. I dunno. Might be dangerous to glamorize a bottle holder, could start a flaunting trend. Soon young men with pretty bottle holders will walk the streets wearing strangely designed trousers with the ass cut out. Oh, wait. They already do that in San Francisco. Nevermind.
Bobstained (Feb 24, 2010)
I think i've performed miricles to make it look pretty, afterall it is an asshole.
