Pretty colors but it could use a little more in the clouds?
fleeting_memory (Jan 30, 2008)
I actually like the sparse aspect you have in this. I love skies that look like this.
Shanghai (Feb 3, 2008)
The tiny little clouds in the center are doing a nice job of holding the whole image together. If you cover them with your thumb you can see your focus blurring across the whole canvas, but with them there you have something to latch on to.

Contest Week 70: Skyscapes
Shanghai (edited Feb 3, 2008)
Contest Week 70: Skyscapes closed for judging Sweetcell has the flu so I'm doing the contest this time too. I was looking back on the past contests and saw we've done a landscape one a long while back, but skyscapes can be really nice too. The sky can be seen so many ways and is often full of the most vivid colors of nature. Depending on weather, time of day, and even where you are in the world the sky can be anything from strikingly sublime to quiet and tranquil. It's no wonder it's b...

woooo hoooo contest #69! Can't think of a better number! LOL Thanks for the vote! Judging was quick. Good thing I stuck this out yesterday!
I can't help but wonder what that bull was thinking while he was looking at this strange creature with a big black box in their face! =) I LOVE reflections and light!! This was fun!
Miss_DJ (Jan 21, 2008)
cool Elly ! glad you won! wonderful!
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jan 21, 2008)
Has to be better than seeing the reflection of your own face there, and having hot bullsnot blown all over it - being frozen with fear and calculating how fast you can tear ass to the fence. hah

This is wonderful in every way.

The eye sees danger, and squirts out acid that melts your face :p

Contest Week 69: Only Have Eyes For You
Shanghai (edited Jan 20, 2008)
Contest Week 69: Only Have Eyes For You closed for judging This time we're focusing on the classic window to your soul. It's been the focus of many artworks, photos, pickup lines, sappy poetry, and so on. Because the eyes are both a door for us to experience the world through and for what's within us to come out, I'd like to see some degree of expression or emotion here. The rules this time are: -You must include at least one eye of any sort in your drawing; it doesn't matter whe...

Thats really beautiful. Amazing idea. It looks great and is really interesting. :)
Shanghai (Dec 22, 2007)
The way your strokes flow so loosely make it feel like both the turtles and all the air around them is moving about.
davincipoppalag (Dec 23, 2007)
Congrats on placing in the contest

Shanghai (Dec 22, 2007)
This is a very strong image with that deep sky and bright fire. It definately feels like it has an upward thrust just looking at it.
davincipoppalag (Dec 23, 2007)
Congrats on second in the contest

I'm not aware of wings, just that I feel like I'm swimming in the air and people are down below watching me
I will try to make this better but keep in mind that my eyes are not working properly lately, the majority of the time

Looks good, we have several blue jays around this part of the country! but I know after watching a hawk attack one, there not friends. The hawk held it down and plucked its feathers, then ate it.
Shanghai (Dec 22, 2007)
the first version, before you went bonkers, looked a lot like the kind of thing that Matisse guy did.
emmamommalag (Dec 23, 2007)
A lot of Matisse's stuff would likely get dumped on here, too.
lori (edited Dec 23, 2007)

Contest Week 67: Flight
Shanghai (edited Dec 22, 2007)
Contest Week 67: Flight closed for judging Your goal here will be to express the idea of flight. In fact, you could say I'd like for you to let your imaginations take flight. I'm hoping for a lot of creativity here because the word "flight" has just so many possible meanings, ways of being expressed, etc. From the dreams of ancient people to the realities of today and the designs for the future, flight is often a strangely natural and familiar concept for we flightless creatures who h...

Ahh sorry! Forgot to add the description!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Autumn_Festival
This is a depiction of the Mid-Autumn Festival/Moon Festival/Mooncake Festival/Lantern Festival that is practiced by many East Asians. People celebrate it to worship the moon and show reverence to dieties like Chang'e (whom I've drawn). Farmers also celebrate the end of the summer haversting season with this occasion.

I based the picture off of a few lines in the version 4 of the stories of the Mid-Autumn Festival, found on wikipedia:
"Although Houyi wanted to shoot her in order to prevent her from floating further, he could not bear to aim the arrow at her. Chang'e kept on floating until she landed on the moon. While she became lonely on the moon without her husband, she did have company. A jade rabbit, who manufactured elixirs, also lived on the moon."

And I also based it off of the wikipedia images depicting the characters of Chang'e and the Jade Rabbit.
