I love the loose style in this. Her face is so pretty, and I really like the skin tones.

Your art is awesome.
Sweetcell (Feb 18, 2006)
I echo all of the above, she has an 80's punk to her. I expect her to start singing "Hit me with your best shot."
Menyway (Feb 18, 2006)
I dont know, it could just be me, but her bust seems kind of low.. even though she isn't wearing a bra they would be higher... like i said it could just be me!!! O_o Anyway awesome use of the Oekaki Shi program!!! I love you're stlye!! Keep up the good work!! ^_^
Jervy (Feb 18, 2006)
Thanks for all the comments everyone.
I've been trying out watercolor brushes in corel painter and wanted to see how shi painter goes...(alot easier to do in corel btw)

Supposed to be a quick sketch until I decided to color it. Spent the majority of the time on that unfortunately... turned out ok.

On a side note, if you use alot of layers on a large canvas in shi-painter it's going to crash if your java is left in it's default setting. I found this out the hard way by ruining an advanced piece when I did a safety save after java ran out of memory. 2 hours of linework disappeared and no the undo button won't fix it and I had about 9 layers all mashed together in a big mess.

Anyway, try adding this to the Java applet runtime settings in your windows control panel: "-Xms64m -Xmx512m" (remove the quotes)
-Xms <-- minimum memory size java will use I have it set to 64Mb
-Xmx <-- maximum memory java will use, mine is at 512Mb so adjust this according to your system (I had to do this or the advanced piece I was working on wouldn't even load!)
Java is set to only use up 64Mb MAX by default...which is easily eaten up by several full layers on a large canvas.

*This stuff may not make a difference if you use less than 4 layers so if it ain't broke don't fix it...

Sean Penn, I believe? Well done Jay.
terracotta (Feb 10, 2006)
You nailed his expression; eyes and mouth great. Thanks for the java info--I have had a couple of saved pictures refuse to load or, if they were saved with layers, only partially load. They were neither large canvas or on the advanced board so I'm not sure if your 'fix' will help but I'll try it.
HunterKiller_ (Feb 10, 2006)
I dunno who that guy is, though he looks familiar. Likin' the loose style.
Jervy (Feb 11, 2006)
Thanks for the comments!
dapoppa: YOU WIN TEH PRIZE!!!! Yep it sure it Sean Penn...with a sunburn lol

tc: It should fix that if you run out of memory, but if the layers come up merged together...you only hope is the undo button. I'm lucky because I had an earlier save with the line art only so I can finish it in painter.

HK: Sean Penn is an american actor...the guy in 21grams or I am Sam.

Japanese cow cartoons...Animu? This looks like one of those illustrations you see in a novel sometimes
Jervy (Feb 4, 2006)
Cows? lol animu is kind of like the more sarcastic/annoying form of the word... I just like to draw these little things to work on full body proportions among other things...

Another development of coloring following the previous. Focusing on facial hair.
I may have gone overboard with the lines rather than using color. Negative space is a little less dramatic than before, but I hope I'm using it effectively.

Crits and Comments welcome as always.

hideyourface (Feb 3, 2006)
that looks awesome. it's kinda hard to tell the head from the background, but the colour is great.

This kind of looks like one of those pictures molded into glass from underneath.

Thanks for all the C&C everyone.
I usually have problems drawing noses but I probably shouldn't have "outlined" it like I did - makes it pop out too much. Will try to develop more on this style on the next one.
DBA: At first I thought you meant the rules of this board but no...I was denied posting on some other board because I didn't do photorealism (rules were kind of unclear in that place)...
DeadlyBlondeArcher (edited Feb 1, 2006)
No, I meant the general "art rules" you learn as you go...the ones it's okay to break once you know them, :) not the rules here. I still think the whole thing is fine, it flows and the main attention is drawn to her beautiful eyes.. and, of course, the biting of her lip. I wouldn't have noticed anything about the nose at all if someone hadn't mentioned it. I wish I were capable of doing something well besides photorealism. It gets really tiring at times. I like your style.
Jervy (Feb 3, 2006)
Yeah that's pretty much what I thought you meant there! I just get annoyed when people think that an artwork is "good" only because it looks like a photo. I know it takes alot of work and is very difficult to achieve but in general it's something I don't particularly find interesting but there are always exceptions to that... I think that everyone is capable of forming their own style but style in itself is hard to define. If you are really getting tired of it, you might want to stray away from photorealism for awhile...
davincipoppalag (Feb 3, 2006)
This is wonderful. I wish I had the talent to try anything but semi-adequate photorealism.

I like the color wash look you used. VEry pretty drawing Jay.
emmamommalag (Jan 30, 2006)
I think it suits it very well. A pretty lady.. someone you know?
JoeNobody (Jan 30, 2006)
I agree with momma, the coloring suits this very well. Nice work
Jervy (Jan 30, 2006)
Hi and thank you for the comments.
I like to think I use alot of expression in my linework but sometimes it ends up looking like a sketch than a drawing. It didn't quite work well in this one but I'm shifting the focus to develop my coloring skills further.
e.momma: lol I wish...

thesolarwinds (Jan 29, 2006)
this is very pretty, the shape of her face is awesome. YAY!
Jervy (Jan 29, 2006)
Thanks for the comments everyone. I do mostly drawings like this so I won't be adding color until I become more comfortable with things. Usually I would draw on a larger canvas, but this is the biggest one in this place...
davincipoppalag (Jan 29, 2006)
She looks a little like Jennifer Love Hewitt too.Very nice work.
