I was bruised and batteredAnd I couldn't tell what I felt I was unrecognizable to myself Saw my reflection in a window I didn't know my own face Oh brother are you gonna leave me wasting away On the streets of Philadelphia I walked the avenue till my legs felt like stone I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone At night I could hear the blood in my veins Just as black and whispering as the rain On the streets of Philadelphia Ain't no angel gonna greet me It's just you and I my friend And my clothes don't fit me no more I walked a thousand miles just to slip this skin The night has fallen, I'm lyin' awake I can feel myself fading away So receive me brother with your faithless kiss Or will we leave each other alone like this On the streets of Philadelphia ~Bruce Springsteen~

rain on a windshield, so well done with such minimilism... Axil, you are amazing. I can hear the song too. this so fits.

you perfectly captured the wet car window effect -- much appreciated. |

The simularities are there...but they're completely unintentional.
voodoobunny (Mar 18, 2006)
I love the shading on the face. :D

similarities to Madonna? That's who I see. But this is once again another great piece. Have you ever taken a story & illustrated it? I would love to see your work along with a passage next to it.
Axil62 (Mar 21, 2006)
I think you could work for Heavy Metal magazine.

Trying some more in this very opaque, loose style from a photo of Tilda Swinton (very beautiful actress). I'm not sure I can pull it off this time.- Couldn't really pull it off this time. I ended up repainting it with a focus on details instead and did a value study; pretty much a failure since I couldn't do it the way I intended.

Thanks all for the comments. I have mixed feelings about this one - I don't completely dislike the end result (though I ran out of space before I got started on the hair again), but it was really a cop out as I reverted back to a style that was comfortable to me. I wanted to paint once again in the style of my earlier picture, and this time things just didn't seem to click like they did before. I think part of it is because I went even bolder this time with the contrast - the last time I built up more gradually with the tones. I also think it was a mistake to go with a celebrity before I had this technique down since I started becoming too concerned about having some sense of likeness (the last one doesn't resemble the person in the photo, but that didn't bother me since I didn't know who he was and didn't have a very good feel for how he looked). That also made me start thinking more about lines again which is something I wanted to avoid. The last one also had very prominent shadows and I could feel the form coming out of them even when I was just painting with two colors. I ended up redoing most of this picture and became a slave to the photo again. I'm going to have to keep trying harder before I can get this technique down.

This dude is smart.

I keep coming back to this to look at the eyes. The whole thing works but I think the eyes are magnificent.
Axil62 (Mar 21, 2006)
Yes yes, quite so. I would most assuredly agree. |

I haven't felt much inspiration to paint anything lately, and I kinda had the blahs and felt sad, so I was browsing photos of polar bears because that always cheers me up. They do so many cute, funny things and I end up laughing instead of feeling sad. I ran across this and wanted to paint it because of the pretty lighting. I love polar bears the bestest. I want one of my own but it's too hot here and it would just eat me anyway.

great pets!
ginny_91 (Mar 27, 2006)
Wow you are one of the best artist ever. I cannot believe this is a painting and on the computer. I'm not a bear lover but in this picture I think I sunddenly like them now!^^
Artiste (Apr 3, 2006)
My favorite thing about this is the way you painted the shadow on the face of the bear in the back. The transluscent quality shows such depth. The colors are so sensitive, and palpable... (I love the way that orange next to pale lavendar happens so distinctly in nature) |

I really, really love these. When I buy my beach house I want to commission you to paint these on huge canvases. (dream on, Cindy)
HunterKiller_ (edited Mar 19, 2006)
This is truly wonderful, absolutely beautiful. However, i have a nitpick, =P I think the circle of background showing through should be a tad darker to give more depth and contrast.EDIT: But now i look at it again, it's probably not a good idea as it would draw too much attention away from the foreground. =] |
